The dude looked exactly like jesus and was British and was on L Ron Hubbards list of dangerous people and borrowed some philosophies from scientology but also belived in multiple dieties, and felt lucifer was a good guy. any help?

Yes, many people did die due to mistakes and incorrect policies, as has happened in pretty much every nation. Of course the Soviets was gonna do the same, being the first people to build the kind of society that they had, and being under constant pressure from both outside and within the country.
Most of it was in the purges, but Stalin was actually against that method, instead preferring reeducation. He only agreed to it because other people were staunch supporters. When the purges went way too overboard, the person responsible (Nikolai Yezhov, at that time head of the NKVD) was arrested and Stalin openly criticized himself for allowing it to happen.
Most people have this view that Soviet society was monolithic and that Stalin somehow controlled the every move of hundreds of millions of citizens, but it is heavily divorced from reality. The Soviet Union had huge issues (as evidenced by the fact that it could even be overthrown), and was indeed repressive. However, every nation has issues, and that doesn't mean the flaws are always inherent to the system itself. Also, ever state has shown itself to be repressive when a social order is threatened. Take the red scare, McCarthyism, or the entire cold war for a few examples just from America, a country which wasn't even under that great of an internal threat. The Soviets were under much greater pressure during their entire existence, so it logically follows they'd be more repressive. It'd be impossible to be more repressive without accidentally accusing, and executing, a larger ammount of innocents.
