Same happened to me but much more recently. I was tricked by some demon but masterminded by God to bring me back to him.
He puts signs everywhere to bring his lost sheep back home (not the racist j-seal stuff). If His signs fail time and time again because of your choice to shut Him out, he goes for more extreme ways to bring you back. He never wanted to, but because of your turning away He felt it necessary.

My first instinct was to blow it off as going crazy and making things up in my mind. That did not work so well but it was enough to scare me into stop committing the sin that let it in. skip forward 10 years later i had completely forgot about it even happening when it happened again but much worse. This time i was more mature and less edgy and realized that this was real and that what i did let it in and God was really mad at me.
I had a extremely hard time with it and thought there was nothing i could do because im a fucked up individual and i can never be good enough and why bother im going to hell anyways. I had a picture of God in my mind as someone who expected perfection and if i didn't meet his standards i was going to hell. After 6 months of being just as terrified of God as i was of the demons that attacked me God lead me to the truth.

Sometimes you can realize you're falling into schizophrenia in the early stages, sometimes you just fall into it blindly. I was so anxious and paranoid in college though that I dropped out.
