A fear of something wretched and evil is far different from the fear of an untamed beast on the prowl. It is a fear of damage inflicted not upon the body, but of damage to one’s mind and soul; a damage to one’s very being. It invokes not a fear of death, but a fear of the sights and sounds one is about to endure. It is an unfamiliar sensation, and while the fear produced when being pursued by an animal that intends to kill may be traumatizing, it is by no means alien.
The beings that invoke these unfamiliar, alien fears are beings who exist not to pick the bones from one’s flesh, ending one’s mortal life for its own survival, but to create fear, picking away at the metaphysical fabric of one’s immortal soul.
