Anyone here have any experience in Zen? Any recommendations for good books on Zen for a Western mind? I have a lot of trouble penetrating into any kind of Zen practice because of how obtuse everything is. I know that's part of the point, but if I can't even get going it's kind of rough for an analytical mind.

Three Pillars of Zen

Just meditate, dude. You're getting hung up on the stories and shit. Just practice.

Look into Alan Watts. He was one of the first to travel to the east, learn, bring it back, and share. And he did a great job sharing too.

Zen masters reject meditation practice. See Huangbo, Mazu, etc.

>there have been non-buddhist zen masters
>there are lay person zen masters
>zen masters that don't meditate

what the fuck is zen then

I suggest reading actual Zen texts. Best to start with are Bodhidharma, Mazu and Huangbo, because there are recorded sermons of them which aren't that hard to understand if you get used to the terminology.
Other Zen masters like Zhaozhou are also very interesting, but often there are only dialogues of them, no sermons, which can make them pretty hard to understand without prior knowledge.

Also here is a very good introduction:
http://poetrychina.net/Story_of_Zen/zenstory0.htm
It tells you about all important zen masters and kinda gives you a tldr of their teachings.

the teaching of zen masters, to find out what that is, you'll need to read them

OP here. Thanks for the recommendations guys! I'll definitely look into them.

I know, but I didn't know where else to post this. I didn't see a "philosophy/religion" board, /b/ would answer with shoveldog, and it isn't porn, so I figured this would be the best place.

Three Pillars of Zen will get you hung up on attainment. Don't read that one OP.

I'd say start with Hardcore Zen
