My personal favorite. Also has a nice Christian and paranormal background, as well.

Incidentally if you're a 40Kfag, just think of this whole movie as humanity's first contact with the Warp and subsequently Chaos.

Watched The Fourth Kind recently and that was enjoyable. It had me going for a little while because I'm gullible and trusted Milla not to lie to me, but overall decent. Creepy owls and shit.

Here's some I watched recently

Banshee chapter: creepy as fuck, kind of a modern take on From Beyond. Probably my favorite movie I've seen this year

The Possession of Michael King: Best possession movie I've seen in while

The Taking of Deborah Logan: Pretty good possession movie

Honeymoon: alright but so low budget it hurt

The Conspiracy: was pretty cool

Area 51: it's alright. The best part is seeing how they plan to get in area 51

Extraterrestrial: campy but fun, ending is shit tho

The Visit: One of the worst load of shit I have ever had the misfortune to waste time watching

Visions: More a thriller than a horror movie but it's actually quite good. Really like the "twist" at the end I wasn't really expecting something like that.

Loved Event Horizon. I would love to see the full version of it but that will never happen. They should either do a remake or a prequel based on the original expedition. We could see what really happened on the "other side". It could make a great fucking movie if it was done right.

Don't get tricked like I did into watching V/H/S

And then don't get double tricked with the "V/H/S 2 is better" nonsense.

If you really want to watch them, see if you can't find the segments separated - the problem with those movies is that you have to watch 2/3rds utter crap to see the 1/3 decent stuff.
>>
>>17035571

It follows is a decent film, nothing terribly wrong with it. Yeah, people sperged over it, but that's not it's fault.
>>
>>17035829
>nothing terribly wrong with it

It follows has some good ideas but fail to deliver them well, instead they diluted them with about 45 minutes of footage that could literally not be there without affecting the plot. They were also very inconsistent with "it" and what are the rule of this thing. Like when she fucking sees it as her grandma coming towards her and exits her classroom, then the "it" is inside the fucking school. But later you see that "it" needs to break windows to get into houses. So this it break the fucking class window? Why didn't we hear shit? Also the part where "it" is on the roof of the house standing there watching when they leave. Why the fuck did it go up there? I could go on but it would be useless.

This movie should have been 1h20 min maximum and that god forsaken ending at the fucking pool should have been rewritten as something that would make at least some sense. I do agree with you that it is decent. The atmosphere and idea were pretty good and I like the music. I thought it had a "80's" horror campy feel to it. But it does have a lot of shit wrong with it.
>>
>>17033985
Not a film, but a good horror tv show that can easily be found online is called Fear Itself.

My boyfriend showed me the pilot yesterday and while it seems cheesy at first, it gets pretty good and genuinely spooky.
>>
>>17035596
Yes. Yes. Yes. Grave Encounters is one of my favorite "found footage" films.
>>
>>17035879
I know things do not always have to tie up. Why do people need complete explanations to everything, including movies with themes about totally unknown things?!? Is it a lack of imagination that magnifies these excusable-or even desirable- questionables into fail-tier plotholes? Is being overly critical of a film become more fun that getting into it and watching it? Are we so far away from viceral reality now that we can't even scare ourselves without nitpicking the living fuck out of a piece of fiction? I say no, but I know I'm generally alone out here. The film-goer is dead, long live the film-goer.

This was pretty good, I really liked it.
It's not classified as horror, but it's pretty spooky
Anyone know of any other Twilight-Zone-esque movies?
>>
I recently re-watched this. I don't know if I'd really call this good, but its definitely got some spook to it. There's this one scene where shit hits the fan that will be burned into my brain until I die.
>>
Pontypool is pretty good. I would rate it more memorable than all the movies listed in this thread.
>>
>>17036259

The bath-tub scene was pretty memorable... I gotta say though, that cover art is really unnerving, it's fantastic.

OP I'm going to recommend Under the Skin, haven't seen if anyone suggested it yet but either way it's worth a watch. More creepy than outright scary, but it's got a coldness to it that I liked. Also set in Scotland, which is nice.
>>
>>17037478

The beach scene in Under the Skin is incredibly disturbing

I want to murder ever single fuck that doesnt like movies because "theyre too unrealistic" or that one dude you sit through a movie with and he says "nah fuck off, no way that could happen"
>>
>>17035879
When I watched the movie the way I thought of it was that "It" is intelligent, it only needed to break into the house because there was no other point of entry that it could have used. For the school scene, obviously the door to the building would have been unlocked or even open for It to enter.

I agree with your point about why It was standing pointlessly on the roof though, that was just unnecessary in the context.
>>
>>17037262
I didn't really like the ending, it seemed too, I don't know, absurd for me.
>>
>>17037534
>>17036009

My niggas. Isn't the unknown and the unexplained half of the spook, anyway?

>>17037493
So true. I can't give enough credit to Scarlet Johansson for how eerily detached she acts, it's fantastic.

Fuck it I'm going to watch it again. That score chills my marrow everytime.

The Taking of Deborah Logan was very nice. I thought it would be spookier, but oh well.

Crimson Peak is a great movie. It's not quite a horror. It's more like a murder mystery with ghosts in it.

The Conjuring and Anabelle are very nice.

Gonna throw my two cents in, and recommend The Atticus Institute. Found footage is my guilty pleasure, and I particularly like the documentary style found footage. This one and Lake Mungo come to mind.
>>
>>17035567
When people ask for recommendations, they generally want to hear people's opinions on the movies too. I value the negative opinions just as much as the positive opinions, as should you. If only people who liked the movies posted, it would always appear that every movie was good, and you'd end up watching a lot of shitty movies.

You don't see a single thing that happens, just hear him talking over the phone to the people in the studio, but holy shit that was one of the scariest scenes I've ever seen in a film.

They cut a shit lot of the gore. Probably because of those cock suckers at mpaa. The footage was supposedly destroyed but some pictures are floating around on the internet. The movie could have been the best horror sci-fi of all time but they had to fuck it up and remove anything remotely disturbing.

Am I the only one who believe that horror movies are supposed to scare/disturb you? I think it is fucking horrible to force movie makers to butcher their work to fit some stupid backward american rating standard (non-american horror movies show a lot more). If you don't want to see gore and tits just don't watch the movie for fuck sake. There is no censorship in art. Accommodations and compromise to fit rating besmirch movie making as an art.

It all depends on what you consider "horror" in your perception of the world. I find suspense to be a really powerful horror element, and this movie made sure the suspense reached 9001 and stayed there. But hey! That's just me.

over 500 pages of ghosts and ghouls researched by a brit author
one of the most horrible was the bridal barge of aran roe, about a haunted oared ship of the dead, casualties of the clan wars back in the day, that has been sighted many times off the coast of ireland
>>
This film made me uneasy for weeks after it. Low budget found footage but the plausibility of it happening is pretty unsettling.

Screenwriter googled occult and proceeded to write his script from Wikipedia. I wanted it to be good with the uncanny name and symbolism but it ultimately falls short with plot holes, cheap jump scares, foolhardy concepts and a base that makes no sense at all.

The only good thing about it? Screams from hell were pretty on point with creepyness.

Just watched, really enjoyed it. Less of a horror movie than a western with some horror throughout. Really shows rough west living, and one of the horror elements is how scary a stranger at night can be, especially back then. Worth the watch if you're a fan of horror, suspense, drama, or western.

Signs
Event Horizon

Alien
Fire in the Sky

Suspense:
Pontypool
Timecrimes
Dark City
The Exorcist
Rec
Jeepers Creepers
Session 9

Occult:
The Ninth Gate
The Devil Rides Out

Mothman is important for historical reasons, as it's one of the only plausible paranormal events, heavily investigated and reported on by real people without ulterior motives.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HxY4suVjSo

Signs is fantastic for a picture of what alien contact will probably be like. Session 9 is slow. Rec has excellent pacing and the ending makes anyone sweat, I had the pleasure of watching these 3 as they were released, without any prior knowledge about them. Memes and the internet have probably ruined them for anyone coming to them in 2015.
>>

>Mothman is important for historical reasons, as it's one of the only plausible paranormal events, heavily investigated and reported on by real people without ulterior motives.

I've considered giving it another chance, but yeah, heavily doubting that. Super hard.

>Signs is fantastic for a picture of what alien contact will probably be like.

Uh, no? For numerous reasons. And it's just a bad movie any way you slice it.

>Rec has excellent pacing and the ending makes anyone sweat

It made me yawn and I was annoyed to see that the ending was one of the clips played in the commercial trailers. I heard people saying good things about the original spanish version, but I doubt I'd watch it if it was even remotely similar.
>>

>Signs is a great movie about isolation and American xenophobia.

It's a stupid movie by M. Night Shamalamadingdong that focuses too much on ~*destiny*~ and has aliens so retarded they try invading a planet full of their one weakness.

See, to me, being grossed out and being scared aren't the same thing. They're both disturbing, but not in the same way. But different people watch horror for different reasons I guess. If someone wants to make a movie with tons of gore in it, that's up to them, and I'm okay with a degree of it, but if that's the main "disturbing" aspect of the film then it's not really scary anymore, it's just gross or annoying or campy. (I would add "lazy" but some of the body horror SFX are anything but lazy, especially in pre-CGI days.) I personally watch horror for the scary side of disturbing, for the suspense, and yeah even the occasional cheap jump scare. If I just want to be grossed out, I'll just go get a job as a hospital orderly.

>people actually posting Babadook, V/H/S, Conjuring and shit like that unironically

The genre is basically dead.

These are my all time favourites:

Jacob's Ladder

The Blair Witch Project

The Mothman Prophecies (it's literally Weird Fiction: The Movie, one of the best Lovecraftian movies out there)

Event Horizon (not scary, but it has great ideas, and just a damn good movie)

The Descent

The (Mithras) Conspiracy

Outpost (again, not scary, but a great movie with some good paranormal shit)

Dog Soldiers (best werewolves in cinema, look actually creepy, American Werewolf can suck it)

Nosferatu (original and remake, Max Shreck's make up still fucking god tier and beats most garbage on the screen these days)

Candyman 1

Paranormal Activity 1 (the rest are just kind of fun to watch because they go off the deep end)

Grave Encounters (doesn't scare me, but has some excellent imagery and ideas)

Alien (thank u jim cameron for ruining the franchise early on)

Halloween (original 1978 one)

The Thing (Carpenter one)

The Haunting (original one)

The Wicker Man (original one)

Night/Curse of the Demon

Session 9

The Borderlands

>>
>>17064540
>Not Babadook
>The Descent
>Halloween

You're joking, right? At least you kind of redeemed yourself with Paranormal Activity and Grave Encounters.
>>
>>17064611
You've seen Babadook, right? How it's pretty good until they completely fuck up the ending? How there's at least three points they could end it, but don't? Babadook was a complete waste of potential. People liked hyping it up because 'NO JUMPSCARES!!!!!' but even though, no, there wasn't, it was at best mediocre. The goddamn children's book itself was creepier than anything else in the film. Another fuck up? They showed the monster, it looked really stupid. It's a Tim Burton monster. You really need to have a solid design apart from 'spooky boogeyman' if you're gonna dare show your monster, which is 99 time out of 100 a terrible mistake for any horror movie.

And I don't know what's with /x/ is these days if you don't think Halloween and The Descent aren't a thousand times better than the trite in cinemas recently. I guess you people don't like it unless there's lotsa spooky jumpscares and scurry monsters and blood! I can't even tell The Conjuring and Insidious apart in my head that shit is so similar.
>>
>>17036282
>>
>>17064687
I have seen Babadook, and I enjoy it. The ending is how you portray it. I, myself, believe the "Babadook" represented grief. You can't get rid of it, you can only live with it. It's never truly gone.

I didn't personally enjoy The Descent because the ending was, although realistic, pretty dumb and anti-climactic. Not only that, but the entire movie just felt... underwhelming?

I thought Halloween was a good movie, don't get me wrong, but I don't remember a point where it actually scared me. Good movie though, and good psycho killer.

Blood is one of those things I do NOT want a lot of in a horror movie. Maybe a scene of gore at the end, *cough* Child's Play *cough* but levels of gore that rival Saw are unnecessary and cheap in terms of horror tactics. (Child's Play must be the funniest "horror" movie out there.)
>Scurry monsters
I will admit that you have me with that one. However, it depends on the design of said monster and the shock value that comes with it. Take IT for example. I don't have a phobia of clowns, but that fucker just makes me want to lose my shit.
>Spooky jumpscares
In order for a jumpscare to be proper, it has to be at a moment of high suspense AND make enough sense to be an actual jumpscare. (e.g. face staring at the main character for a split second, phone ringing when least suspected (startling the victim), etc.)
If you want to see a good example of what I prefer in a horror movie, just watch Dead Silence.

My problem with stuff like Babadook is, at the end of the day, I think the most important thing in horror is atmosphere, and it's the atmosphere and ideas of a film that actually get me more than anything. Descent has a perfect setting, characters who seem to have believable relationships and some improbable but nonetheless viscerally effective creatures, plus great cinematography. This just adds together for me into a good atmosphere that never loses its feeling or atmosphere. Halloween's atmosphere comes from the essentially faceless killer (faceleness is a huge important part of horror, think of how many successful slasher killers have intact, regular human faces - Freddy, Mysers, Jason, Leatherface, etc. all have something masking their regular human features) and the implications about him the doctor goes on about. It's implied Myers isn't human anymore in some way that's never gone into because the doctor straight up doesn't know. Then when Mysers gets shot eight times and falls out a second story window, it's hammered right in that, no, he isn't human anymore. It perverts the familiar, takes what ought to be an at least quantifiable thing, and totally screws with your perception of it. Myers ought to be just a lunatic on the run, but he isn't. He's something else now, and you'll never know just what he is. Halloween does it so lowkey and so well that no one did it as good since.

Babadook had atmosphere. It had good visuals, good ideas - that book creeped me out more than anything - but in the end couldn't retain its atmosphere, it took a step too far and lost its own feeling. Atmosphere comes about from the mixture and reaction of every element of the film and when one thing is out of balance, it's all lost, it's all skewed. Near the end, when she's yelling into the chasm of darkness and bringing a bowl worms to it in the basement, it's such a shift that the initial feeling it set up is lost.

I'll continue this rant in another post-
>>
>>17065194
Now, Alien and The Thing showed their monsters, but the difference in those films from a lot of what you get today, is that they were startlingly unnerving designs. When you see the faceless (there it is again) lump with teeth that is the Alien or the multitude of horrible bullshit that is The Thing, it's so starkly in contrast to anything seen before. The Alien teased bits and pieces of its monster, and you always saw it dark places - every sight just made you ask more questions. The Thing was a squirming, screeching, really awful thing that exuded a sense of horrible, unique physicality, which is something no Insidious demon or Conjuring ghost can ever top. So much goes into the design of a successful monster beyond what the artist thinks looks scary. The Alien, for instance, is jam packed with sexual and very animalistic, primal imagery meant to sicken and frighten you on a very base level. As Ash said, it's basically perfect. The Thing is made to make you ask 'what the fuck am I looking at?' while tendrils whip and maws gnash and it screams. It's like a wounded or scared or angry animal, which it basically is.

Hell, speaking of Insidious, the one, single thing I really liked about it was that one scene where the red face appears behind Patrick Wilson. That's how you do a jumpscare. It was momentary, totally out of nowhere and most importantly, wasn't in your face. It really catches you off-guard, it makes you paranoid, it actually adds to the tension and atmosphere, rather than being a traditional jumpscare that relieves built up tension.
I can't remember which film it was in, one of the Insidious or Conjuring movies, where a woman's walking down a hallway in a house with arches in one wall you see through. As she passes one, you see, out of focus, a black shape sitting in a chair, on the next pass, it's gone, but then this spooky scary ghost woman leaps out screaming and what was a fantastic, subtle set up is ruined.

>Thank you for this, anon.

No problem, anon, I'm glad I can help. I love the horror genre, I'd talk horror theory for days if I could. I posted >>17064540 and it's based entirely off what I talked about there. If you haven't seen any of them, give them a try.

One film I forgot to mention is the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which genuinely makes me feel uneasy. It's got the grimiest, nastiest just plain unnatural atmosphere. The bleached look, the heat, the desolation, the whole decay of the place, the unkempt nature of the house, the Family themselves just make up this incredibly grimy and visceral atmosphere. Plus, knowing the whole cast and crew were miserable making it from the heat and stink makes it even more real. That film just somehow taps into a really awful and unfortunately quite plausible setting and atmosphere. It skirts the line between real and unreal just a tad too easily.
