Do we have evidence of cannabis playing a part in ancient religions? Ritual or casual use, strong attitude one way or the other (either forbidding or encouraging)?
I would guess India and Central American tribes would be most likely, as it's geographically native.

Yes, eapecially Hindu and Himalayan traditions. Nowadays Hindu Sadhus (wandering ascetics) in the worship of Shiva still smoke ganja. Actually, the name "ganja" came from the Ganges river in India. Older shamanic traditions used it as well.
