I've been thinking about calling my mom and asking her about it, but she would probably just deny it tooth and nail, and there's also a good chance they'd be listening.
It almost makes sense though, why she'd agree to something like this. My dad left when she was pregnant, and she must have been worried she wouldn't be able to take care of me. Then some kind of doctor says he can take care of us in exchange for some meddling in my development? That could be it, because she's only held menial jobs that must not pay much, for as long as I can remember, but she was never worried about money.
