We still camp those woods, but since we moved the camp down the hill away from the creepy 50's ford truck thats abandoned miles away from any road, the creepyness is only when I camp alone. Something larger than a coyote came into my camp and walked around my tent for an hour. I never go in those woods alone unarmed anymore.

This is eastern europe though, and we don't have skinwalkers here, but we have creatures in the folklore that can take the form of someone or possess them.

Ive had creepy wendigo-like encounters at my cabin property outside of Winchester, VA inside of the WV border.
Theres apparently a goat man whom the locals have seen alot of. He leaves open carcasses and prints and fur. Ive been in my cabin and had motion lights go off outside my bedroom and see clear as day the creature running back into the woods. So im a true believer, but Ive also had encounters when I camp out alone or with my dog where i wake up and theres fuckhuge goat prints in the mud around the tent and clumps of rabbit fur.

I like to think that there are creatures that used to be apex predators but failed to adapt to the changing environment over the last 10-20,000 years. They killed humans and left a powerful presence in folk memory, but gradually were pushed further and further into remote wilderness as human civilization spread. Now they've all but disappeared, though isolated remnants are still in places like some national parks and unsettled wilderness.
