Kubrick was a dedicated man but the reality is that people have put so much time into analyzing them they miss the basic concepts. I'm not educated on the oscars but the way i'd view it is that eyes wide shut might just be the least popular of his films, even his early stuff overshadows it. The point of the movies was not to show that this kinda crap does or doesn't exist, it's to show a) that people with money have nothing better to do than have crazy parties (and I don't blame them, I'd do the same ) and b) a lot of the conspiracy business is mostly bluffs.

Kubrick's films are dense, filled with deep subtext and symbolism. If you watch the 2012 documentary "Room 237" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2085910/) you'll understand how many different interpretations people have of his films.
Tom and Nicole may have some idea as to what Kubrick's vision was with the film. But likely not... they may just have another interpretation of what they believe Kubrick was trying to achieve. They just might have better insight because they were on set with him and screened extended cuts of the film.
Another anon brought up 28 minutes missing from the film. Having worked on feature films myself (in some capacities editing), 28 minutes is A LOT. Only spent about 5 minutes Googling it, but found a reddit discussion and some Kubrick fansite discussion. I really doubt that the extra 28 minutes would have made things "more clear" because Kubrick doesn't work that way. It would likely lead to more speculation and mystery.

This theory has several very interesting elements:
1) The Doc you will find when googling isn't the one which puts forth the actual case. Instead, you find a "mock-u-mentary" starring folks like Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney, who laugh at the end (over clown music) at how absurd the idea is, and how dumb anyone would have to be to believe it. This film is called "Dark Side of the Moon." The real, original film called "Kubrick's Odyssey" seems to be an unusually difficult to find, usually mis-titled on french youtube or similarly back-water spots. The way this doc has been scrubbed from nearly every source and largely replaced with a ridicule-trap sure makes me wonder.
2) The argument made by the real film is very interesting too: that we did go to the moon, and that we also faked some footage. It reconciles inconsistencies in some footage from the early Apollo missions with the undisputed, verifiable proof that we at least put a mirror and things on the moon.
Maybe this cutting-edge SFX expert, who worked very closely with NASA, and had unprecedented and total creative freedom for his whole career, and who died while making a movie about getting a glimpse of the lifestyles of the hyper-rich, would indeed have been the best person to ask if you needed to fake up some B-roll just in case A11 blew up, found moon-men, or just to keep certain aspects of our space-tech under wraps from other governments.
