Why do you think a gender is unrealistic? The evolution of gender confers many fitness benefits, including the ability to promote preferential alleles through mate selection. Intelligence is a trait that really can't evolve in asexual or clonal species in the first place. To evolve complex traits, you need to have a mechanism for selecting advantageous traits. Asexual species do not have this. There's a reason why sponges have remained functionally unchanged for hundreds and hundreds of millions of years.
