School shootings weren't even that big when I was a kid (we were shocked about Columbine, and that was it) and my school in AZ had lock-down drills. Big difference here would obviously be hearing shooting, police, etc. It could easily be argued that the kid was relating the shooting to practice drills, or that the kid was told it was a drill because that's smarter than saying "Hey look kids! What's the "darndest things" here? The adult knew right away it was gun shots, while at least one kid, possibly others thought something fell? Big whoop. In a crisis situation, you need to stay calm, and that's easily a way to help kids keep their nerve while they're packed in a small bathroom.

I'm actually trained as an actor, and this is pretty bullshit. There's no objective way you can quantify their reactions. You have no idea what they are going through. All these happy reactions are completely reasonable. It's an extreme situation. You are excited even if it's a bad thing. Yesterday you were just a person now you are on tv and world famous. You have been made important by this horrible thing that has happened to you. Anyone that's on camera, especially women will be inclined to smile because it makes you look attractive. You might be feeling relief as well as grief. People smile all the time when they are sad or any time they are in an awkward situation. If you are crying on camera you are smiling too because that's how you maintain yourself to communicate.
All these people saying that the families aren't sad enough are basically the equivalent of the people who say rape isn't real when the victim gets sexual pleasure from it. It just shows that you have no idea how humans work.
