I searched him on google out of curiosity. not many results, most of which were linked to the anime itself. i assumed that he was a fictional person. but now? /X/ KNOWS ABOUT HIM? John Titor is a chrononaut from an alternate reality which he refers to as a world line. On his world line things happened differently from our perceived reality and have gone further out in time from our perspective but it is similar enough that he could use a form of hysteresis to estimate what we might be going through in our near future.
He made a lot of posts around 2000 but vanished off the net in 2001, some months before 9/11.
He posted the basics about how his temporal displacement device worked and what happened on his worldline (which a lot of people interpreted as predictions)
Pic related is a diagram of the machine.
The invention of the machine was described as being pioneered through a series of discoveries made at CERN, which made gravitational manipulation possible. This enabled a concept for a practical machine where two "mini black hole singularities" interacted to create a form of a wormhole. Titor also described a gravity lock system which made sure the device stayed within the right gravitational conditions (so that it wouldn't end up in outer space or inside a solid)

I think it's obvious at this point it was the hoax, based on the sheer fact that there was no civil war in 2005, no descent into fighting starting in 2009, no event in 2012 and no world war in 2015 so far and with a month left, doesn't look like it.
Of course the main argument against it is that John Titor didn't go back in time, he travelled to alternate universes. But he did say that the difference was only by 2%, some things would be a bit different. I think the lack of devastating world war would be more than 2% though.
I've still seen a few theories around, though. That a lot of what John Titor said was delayed and now we're starting to see it, with the divided America, or that some American officials saw his posts and ensured that it didn't happen, and the theory that John Titor was actually attempting to stop all the events from happening, but I swear he once made a post that it doesn't matter what he did here as it's not his universe, so his universe would remain the same, hence why he posts, so that doesn't matter.
Even though I think he's 99% a hoax, I still find him interesting. Probably the most famous 'roleplayers' I guess you'd call them, hoaxes where people claim to be vampires/time travellers/monster hunters/secret paranormal agents etc. Because after Titor came an influx of them.
His predictions were either 100% wrong or amazingly correct, whoever the guy was knew his shit. Even the 'civil war' stuff seems to be happening now with Ferguson and the presidential race and gun control wars and such.

I think what's fascinating about it was that he predicted a post 9/11 world pretty accurately before 9/11 even began. While his 'big dates' weren't correct e.g. A World War, the Final Olympics, Parting of the red sea in 2012. So a few days ago I first heard (and then read) about John Titor. I decided to talk about it with a friend of mine from France, and we had a long discussion.
He was adamant that in no way 20 years would be enough to change society like Titor proposed, while I said fear of other nations could lead to severe and fast changes in behavior. My friend refused to believe so, and said even if the US and some other country decided to go to war, France would be fine. France has been giving support to other countries for a while and no harm ever came to the country because of it. Wars were things of the past for him.
