Whiteday (it is said to literally be the scariest game ever made. In fact, the maker had to patch out some of the ghosts because they made the game unplayably scary).

Also System Shock and Deus Ex if you like old games. They're both cyberpunk RPGs. System Shock is sort of a horror-RPG, while Deus Ex is basically an RPG about conspiracy theories and Illuminati and whatnot.

Since YNs been brought up, like, twice or something, might as well give .flow a rec.

It's a fangame for YN where you play as this mentally ill chick who's pretty heavily implied to be quarantined. If you're into YN and body horror, then this is right up your alley.

Anon, if you want the sp00ks, don't play Diablo, System Shock or Deus Ex. Yeah they're "patrician" old games, they have great stories and they're fun to play, but they're not spooky.

shit i forgot the first Dead Space and Alien: Isolation. Great games if you don't want the PS2 old graphics/RPG Maker graphics.

I beat it. It was... good, to start out with, I guess. The biggest problem is that, well, the sanity meter was a good idea, but was poorly implemented.

See, you can see it, it's on the hud just like your health and magic, and can be healed just like your health and magic. So when the sanity effects, which were the game's selling point, happen, you just look at your green bar and are like "oh, my sanity meter's low, better heal that up lol" and then you cast a Restore Sanity spell to fill the green bar back up, and the effects immediately stop.

That's not scary at all. That's just, like, why did they even bother?
>>
>>16969068
Yes and you may have heard it from me. It's a little dated, mechanics feel like Alone in the Dark but a good and involved Lovecraft style story. If there was a PC version it would be on all /x/ lists but Gamecube

here's a weird story about /x/ videogames and maybe I can get some help.
>part.1
>six or seven years ago
>meet some dude in a party and we hang out for a while (no homo, we just shared some common interests like weed and videogames) he's pretty chill and invites me to his house.
>lot's and lots of old computers, broken videogame consoles and weird unknown machine parts, he looks like one of those techie guys.
>see a bunch of old play station, the old gray ones. he tells me he needs some money and he can sell one to me really cheap and he can also give me games too.
>we agree and he brings a big plastic bag filled with game discs, scratched, no boxes, all of them copies, some with the name written with marker and others completely unknown. he tells me to take the bag back home and test them, I can choose 12 I like most.
>that night I start testing the discs, many can't be read (too much scratches), others are music, anime, and some games.
> I started choosing stuff I liked. I got like 15 already but I just wanted to keep looking through all that shit.
>next one is a scratched disc "lion's...[something illegible]" is written on the disc cover, I start playing the game.
>eerie sad music starts playing, looks like a survival horror or something.
>I press start and some cinematic starts playing, some rainy street and a carousel, I start moving around in first person view, suddenly something hits me in the back and blood splatters the screen.
>game over.

>>16969594
part.2
> again start a new game, but this time there's no carousel or rainy street. I start directly in front of a blue door, I touch the blue door and everything starts fading.
>suddenly I wake up in the wooden floor of what looks like a steam boat with those giant wheels things on the sides.
>I walk a little and suddenly notice something crawling under the stairs leading to the second floor.
>I turn and start running back but a black thing with human head and rectangular body crawls from a hole and attacks me.
>but at the same time my character got attacked I blinked from the jumpscare.
>I then noticed something, an image got burned in my retina, a single frame of the attack, but it was not the monster, it was a little girl, dressed in some victorian era outfit with no eyes and spewying blood.
>I nope the fuck out, turn off my tv and go to sleep.
>bad fucking idea.
>the image is still burned in my retina, every time I close my eyes I see her face, I constantly start having nightmares during the following days until I gave back the bag to my friend.
I didn't keep the game so I don't know its name and my friend is long gone, I've been trying to find that game but the only clue I have is the "lion's" title writing on the cd. if anyone knows of what game I'm talking about please tell me, I need to replay that game and make sure that girl was part of the game and not something I imagined.

You know to play all the Silent Hills, Fatal Frames, Residents so here are stuff from the top of my head that is either newer or not as often recommended

Alien: Isolation - is pretty scary, nice 70s atmosphere too

Blair Witch Project: Rustin Parr - it's the only decent Blair Witch game, but it's enough. Hella creepy

Call of Cthulhu: Shadow of the Comet / Prisoner of Ice - lovecraftian point&click games from early 90s. recently released on steam

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth - first person survival horror from the ps2/og xbox era. think like amnesia kinda, but you have a gun.

Corpse Party Repeated Fear - it's an RPG maker game that somehow manages to get very unsettling. Not sure how is the newest entry since they switched to adorable 3D chibis. The first game is on PC and easily playable on PPSSPP. Also it;s coming to steam soonish I think.

Diablo - the original one. there is something incredibly creepy about descending into hell level by level with no other soul to aid you.

DreadOut - poor man's Fatal Frame but still worth playing

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse - this is probably my favourite Fatal Frame despite Crimson Butterfly being widely acknowledged as peak of the series. But man, I loved the story and characters, plus the hospital segments automatically get +100 to NOPE levels. Also it was never released outside Japan but there is a (good) fan translation and it's playable on Dolphin

Fatal Frame Maiden of the Blackwater - is a WiiU exclusive so not available for most but man it's gorgeous and a proper Fatal Frame after 7 or so years

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream - a very creepy old school point&click game

Kholat - a walking simulator but you can actually die so not really. Centered around the Dyatlov Pass incident.

P.T. - you probably won't get a chance to play this anymore but if you can somehow get ahold of it, do it by all means. It was fucking terrifying.
Also in a way Konami created a perfect lost media creepypasta material for the future, heh

Resident Evil 0 / Remake - Remake is an amazing HD version of one of the most renowed horror game classics ever and should be played by anyone. 0 is a mixed bag of opinions but it still carries that classic Resident Evil gameplay horror fans miss so much. 0 will also be released in HD version in Q1 of 2016 on about everything.

Silent Hill Shattered Memories - a re-imagination of the original Silent Hill. opinions vary from "greatest SH ever" to "shit" but it just means it's all the more worth playing I guess.

Soma - haven't played it myself
watched streams though
but it's from the people of Amnesia and created a decent amount of buzz and seems to be well liked

Stasis - it's not really scary but has an amazing atmosphere and while playing you feel like you are back in 90s. It's inspired by Sanitarium

The Secret World - it's an mmo and not really a horror game but you probably want to play it anyway. It's also easy to play solo if mmos are not your thing

The Park - recently released spin off of The Secret World. It's a short walking simulator. Inside an abandoned Theme Park. Clowns.

This War of Mine - it's a horror of a different kind. But you might feel pretty depressed afterwards.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - another walking simulator. Has a pretty oppressive 'in a woods' atmosphere. iirc you can only die during one of the puzzles but that doesn't mean you won't feel uneasy during rest of the gameplay.

the room is very special and is indeed the last blessing team silent left us of the silent hill franchise. watch rangnar rox video on sh4, he nails it like 95%. same with his SH lore analysis, solid 90% good stuff. i own all the sh's except PT bc no ps4. homecoming has one fun boss fight but has cringeworthy puzzles that kill all the atmosphere. downpour was good idea but poorly implemented. dealing with ps3 hardware restrictions but still....

I'd still consider Homecoming and Downpour "passable" even if obviously inferior to the first 4 games.

Hard to do without spoiling but it makes you think about what life really is, what is considered living, what is considered alive, and has robots, AI, people being saved as memory on disks to be loaded later...
Seriously some parts were really unsettling because it puts you in uncomfortable moral situations.

Homecoming was god-awful.
I mostly felt like the production studio didn't have enough time to finish the game and didn't really give a shit either way.
Most of the creatures were recycled from older parts and the story was almost non-existent.
And that's not even touching on the technical aspects. There are several game-breaking glitches that are scattered throughout the entire game, some of which can make your save file useless.
Avoid Homecoming at all costs, kids.

If you don't mind puzzles, some of the Nancy Drew games are pretty spooky. I would say the best one to try would be Curse of Blackmoor, it's one of the older games but has a great atmosphere and surprisingly good spooks. >at its birth it wasnt intended to be a silent hill game, so there are some non-traditional game aspects.
That's actually a misconception

>Kikizo: One of the first things I wanted to ask was about the origins of the concept for Silent Hill 4, the idea of this apartment with a tunnel to an alternate world of horrors - what inspired this idea?

>Tsuboyama: We wanted to make a sequel after Silent Hill 3 and you could say that was the initial concept, but upon that we needed to implement a lot of new flavour to the sequel, otherwise it would have been the same old Silent Hill. So for that, we created "The Room" as the concept for the game, so that we could use to represent the contrast between the normal and the abnormal life which changes suddenly. For the scenario we got our general influence from a book called Coin Locker Babies, which was written by a Japanese writer called Ryu Murakami. It talks about a baby abandoned in a coin locker. That was the general background.
