Danny Devito actually reproduces by parthenogenesis, and what you witnessed was a Devitoling. They're ultimately harmless, and they're usually eaten by local wildlife or housecats long before they reach adulthood.
I understand how ridiculous it sounds, but that's the best way of describing what I saw.
