Mass extinctions aren't uncommon in herd animals, or aren't surprising really. They all eat and shit in the same area for seasons at a time. All it takes is a few catching some bacteria and living long enough to shit it out amongst their shared food source to infect the entirety of the herd. Whomever survives and goes on to breed will be more genetically fit than all of those who died. Then the herd rebuilds.
It probably meant they were overpopulated in the first place, now the grasslands they feed on will have time to replenish
