Probably a snake or some other thing like that thatd be hard to see from far away. Thatd explain why he ran also if he had just accidentaly grabbed a snake instead of a turtle or catfish he was trying for. My guess is some sort of animal. Are you in florida? Lots of weird aquaic life there
