The part about the gerbil though was bad because for some reason I always associated it with that character from the Shining, the Walking Dude's lackey, who had a pet rabbit as a child and forgot to feed it for a couple of days and it scraped all the flesh of its paws off and face trying to get out of its wire cage. I read that before I saw the episode, and the two are now linked in my mind, so that funky, moderately unsettling image of the Courage the Cowardly dog character's shorn gerbil always makes me think of that, and other general fucked up pet stories I've heard people tell, which alot of people just keep buried deep down.
