I'm learning Japanese and would like to broaden my learning with some references to read about paranormal lore/conspiracies/stuff, and some recs for some horror? Any media will do.
In return I can tell you the one source I have at all: Saya in Underworld's blogspot (apparently 4chan thinks I'm spamming when I post the url sooo)
Aw, look at that... A thread that genuinely fits in here at /x/ goes ignored while bullshit conspiracy theories, tarot card readings, and other such nonsense gets all the attention.
Are you looking for text specifically in Japanese or just Japanese lore in general>
>>14867461
Well I did try
>>14867465
Preferably still in English, but I'll take whatever!
Check this out, OP:
http://sacred-texts.com/shi/kwaidan/index.htm
>>14867340
OP, look for the movie "Kwaidan".
If you can sit still through 3 hours of movie, it's a beautiful and scary trip on traditional spooky japanese stories
This isn't very helpful but Wikipedia has a huge list of Yokai and their descriptions. spiraphobia is a blog on tumblr that shares assorted Japanese horror things. Unfortunately, I don't know of too many places that write about Japanese folklore other than the occasional "Hanako the toilet ghost" ones but if you are looking for horror movies I highly recommend NOROI: The Curse. If you are just interested in seeing yokai related things, you could always try watching the children's film The Great Yokai War. If you are just looking for eery/creepy Japanese stuff in general and don't mind sitting through manga there is always Uzumaki and Kijin Gahou.
and who can forget the classic "aokigahara forest" documentary.
This site will be your new best friend, although sadly it has died and must be viewed through archives.

There's also this.

I wish I could get in contact with the owner and get that site revived, it was awesome.

>>14867546
I'm not OP but thanks for this stuff!
>>14867562
No prob.
I always thought the various treatments the Japanese gave Yamata no Orochi were really interesting. It's more mythological than paranormal, but the old movie "Orochi" was pretty creepy.
>>14867340
Not lore but, Junji Ito is pretty dope and japanese
Edogawa Ranpo is supposed to be a good japanese horror author.
back from my ice cream run to find that you guys are the best! ?????!
Learning Japanese?
Maybe you should try 2chan's /x/, if they have their own /x/.
inyuasha has all the classic Japanese paranormal legends in it. plus it's anime, desu.
Jigoku Sensei Nube manga
>>14867814
sadly I don't seem to see an equivalent to paranormal, however I'm having to use Google translate to help me out.
>>14867870
Well those stories that were translated at saya's gotta come from somewhere.
>>14867879
Yeah dude I wouldn't know where she gets those stories from, but it didn't even occur to me to investigate sources she may ever include. HMM.
>>14867340
there was a reference to to those guys in the hit animated cartoon series arthur. allegedly these little guys live in rivers and the only way to defeat these water demons is to trick them into bowing.
Look into Japanese Buddhist notions of Hell and the afterlife. Hungry Ghosts are some fucked up shit.
this little guy is the hairy cousin of the Kappa, his name is Hyosube and hes very pleased to meet you.
>>14867340
In the same boat, I'm very interested in this thread
>>14867818
Oh fuck no. My sister tried to get me to watch that and I couldn't stand the dub, sub, or manga, it's just a shitty series.
>>14867340
>I'm learning Japanese
hey me too
>>14868784
You could try Mononoke, Tactics, Requiem for the Darkness.
>>14868815
This is 4chan. It's not a coincidence. Half of /jp/ and a significant minority of /a/ are learning Japanese.
>>14869736
Already saw Mononoke Hime.
>>14869870
No. This.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mononoke_%28TV_series%29
>>14869894
Oh. I may look into that.
>>14867340
Perhaps watch Mushishi. IIRC only one story was legitimately scary, but its a nice and relaxing watch.
Have you try Jigoku Sensei Nube?
>>14869910
Mushishi is great. It's not supposed to actually be Japan, but it feels like feudal Japan a bit. But it's a great series, some sad stories, some awesome ones...but it's also so very tranquil. And it's just a cool series.
>>14867461
>implying the rest isn't equally /x/-related
I have some illustrations for you OP from a book called Gazu Hyakki Yak?.
>>14870158
Which is, of course, all up on Wikipedia with translations.
Kwaidan, nigga.
Look into Setsubun - Feb 3rd which is like The Exorcist with beans
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d3bIfxjszU
>>14869736
>Half of /jp/ and a significant minority of /a/ are learning Japanese.
Hope that works out
>>14870633
I think the anime in Japan and here are different. Still hilarious though.
>>14867758
Seconding Junji Ito. He's pretty great, and his manga works are all online and translated.
>>14870633
Laugh if you like, but fluency in a second language looks great on a resume. The chubby weeaboo on /jp/ today will in twenty years be a tenured sociology professor or Junior VP of Sales (Asian division). It's the long game that counts. It's also a lot easier to be successful at a job that incorporates your passions than in one you're indifferent to.
>>14869910
What episode was that?
>>14871116
Yeah I could have decided against Japanese because "ohh weeaboo" but I just don't care, it's interesting to learn and clicks with me instinctively. Also I live on the east coast and there is a bulk of the people around who are native Asian (many Korean) so finding a Japanese community here isn't difficult, especially in bigger cities.
That and I didn't want to learn the other relevant foreign language around: Brazilian Portuguese.
>>14867340
Onmyouji I and II two movies about Abe no Seimei. Lot's of yokai and evil spirits and such.
>>14871116
>>14871398
See pic. There's nothing wrong with learning Japanese, just don't go around talking in kawaii pocky neko ecchi pantsu speak all the time.
>>14871116
That is, if that chubby weeaboo actually applies himself instead of just using his language skills to watch his raw anime videos and annoy his classmates.
My favoritu nippon paranormu monstru is da dirty froot monstru.
Essesntially, a giant disembodied food appears in your house and demands that
you bathe it. If you refuse to bathe it the foot will linger in your house like a rude guest.
How absolutley horrifying
>>14872330
No, a weaboo is all the ones in red, bro.
To OP or anyone else on /x/ learning Japanese, I would highly recommend this book (pic related) and the other books in the series. Each one has 99 stories that are similar to what you'd find in nope threads here except told in 3rd person and set in modern Japan. The stories are short, like 2-3 pages, the sentences use typical grammar but nothing super complicated and there aren't too many difficult vocabulary words. They're pretty entertaining and have been great learning resources for me. The series is ????? and the author is ????.
Pretty nice website about japanese monsters/ghosts:
http://hyakumonogatari.com/
This myth is pretty awesome:
http://hyakumonogatari.com/2013/05/10/bakekujira-and-japans-whale-cults/
>Read up on Gashadokuro
>Giant, indestructible, invisible skeletons
>Only detectable by a ringing sound in your ear
>Have tinnitus
It's a special kind of hell.
>>14874074
This is the inevitable fate of the filthy /jp/ NEET, bar the classmates since he'd never go outside anyway.
more?
Look up Tomino. It is a Japanese poem that supposedly if read out loud the reader will then die.
>>14867546
