Is there a guide on how to make these kinds of images? I'm trying to figure out the process in photoshop but it has me stumped.

i think http://imgur.com/gallery/UG4v9 is talking about essentially the same process, just for a different reason (get the same image to appear differently on different backgrounds), maybe it'll help?
if anyone remembers that specific infodump though I second this request
