If you're really serious about learning programming, please do yourself a favor and start with something a bit more sane. Visual Basic is trash of the lowest caliber and should be avoided. I'd recommend starting with Python, then moving to something like C++ once you've mastered it, but there are plenty of other options.

VB, you use "dim" for primitives, and "set" for object references.
Yes, I know.
Most languages where OO was added as an afterthought (PHP, for example) make you write different code to do the exact same thing to primitives and objects.

VB's syntax and IDE is horrible, but it's really good for RAD, and it integrates with a lot of stuff you actually use to let you do a lot of actually useful stuff.
C++ may have a better IDE, but VBA will write that report your boss wants that takes you four hours of donkey work.
