Hello /wsr/, can you help me remember an anime/cartoon I forgot?
It's about a group of people travelling a world populated by creatures a la digimon, who turn into cards once they are defeated. These cards can be absorbed to gain power, but the main characters never do. Someone who does eat cards though is this eagle/man hybrid villain, which I think also has machineguns. He was a particularly tough one iirc.

Sounds like Monster Rancher, except it's not cards, it's stones.
I know you say it's "a la Digimon" but are you sure it isn't the third season Tamers? They use cards in this series to power up their Digimon. When they are destroyed they don't become cards but data, the good guys don't absorb it but bad/regular digimon do to gain more power. I'm pretty sure the eagle is Beelzemon...not machineguns and he gains wings later on.

I am not saying the anime is edgy, but the world is less joyful than the suggested shows. The designs also have sharper lines, more gundam/dragonball than mazinga/pokemon, so to say.

Definitely not digimon.
By "a la digimon" I was trying to convey the design of the creatures, not simple monsters, but not full-on mytical entities/pokemons.
The eagle guy also has an eagle face, and makes screeching noises a couple octaves too high.
