any help with this problem, /sci/? I don't even know where to start... Since the mass involved is ever changing, my guess is that I'm supposed to somehow write a conservation of momentum and to find some sort of a link with the elastic force.. To make matters even worse, assumption 4 throws my intuition away, as I can't say if the oscilations will go on forerver or if they're gonna stop
Any help would be appreciated

That means the mass is not changing enough for it to matter

Gonna take a guess that it's constant
I'm also currently enjoying some diarrhoea so I'm not thinking clearly atm

I think that's supposed to tell that the period of this oscilations is small so you can somehow approximate it with a harmonic oscilator. If the mass would be constant, I don't think it would oscilate. The oscilations are driven by the fact that the new weight of the chain, (L+b)*g*sigma is bigger than the old elastic force for the equilibrium position.
