what are some good headphones for someone that doesn't know much about audio and such?

Anything looking this wacky is not going to sound any better.
From personal experience I can recommend AKG K450. Though this pair is kinda bass oriented, they can be tuned to listen to basically anything with an acceptable quality.
If you want something cheaper, the Sony zx310 are an acceptable option but don't expect anything mind blowing.

you can get a pair of AKG K240 Studio for around 70 bucks, great headphone for someone who is just getting into nicer headphones. They're comfortable for me up until around the 6 hour mark.
