That's a standard SATA connector.

since the death of PATA, there's really only one for consumers: SATA (Serial ATA). every recent 2.5 inch drive should be compatible. if you want a recommendation: buy an SSD. it'll be the biggest speed upgrade your laptop could potentially receive. they're really really nice (even though not yet big enough for their price).

That's just a normal sata connector, same as what you'd see on a desktop hard drive. The four freestanding pins are probably just for configuring jumper settings, so I wouldn't mess with them.

On a side note, I'm glad laptops started using SATA, since laptop PATA drives used to be somewhat annoying to deal with. You'd have to plug them into an adapter to use them on a desktop, and it was really easy to accidentally bend some of the pins or connect the adapter upside down, potentially killing the drive.
