Well, /wsr/, let's give this a try.

My sleeping interest in prehistoric life was recently woken up. Something I'm especially interested in are mass-extinctions and the world just after them. I want to learn more.

When I look for 'more', I either find entertaining but rather superficial information, or scientific articles that make no sense to non-geoloists.

What would be a good read for a curious layman with some basic knowledge of the matter?
