Long story short, I've got a single day to watch anime and escape from life before I'm possibly going to have to stop for a long time.
Suggestions for last anime? My favorites include: Garden of Sinners, Texhnolyze, Serial Experiments Lain, Steins;Gate, Haibane Renmei, Kino's Journey, Mushi-shi, Claymore, 5 cm, Paprika, Perfect Blue, Black Lagoon, and NHK.
I've seen a lot of stuff like kill la kill, gurren lagann, Log horizon, but it feels too lighthearted and childish to be memorable.
The reason Garden of Sinners and Texhnolyze are my favorite is because of how immersive and emotional they are.

Have you tried Natsume Yuujinchou it's a bit a mix of Mushi-shi and Uchouten Kazoku.
If you haven't seen Uchouten Kazoku I'd recommend that as it's probably the best anime that came out in 2013.
Or if overall you're looking for dark Mononoke is good as well.

mah nigga. My favorites are a tie between that show and Samurai Champloo.
Ixion Saga is pretty hilarious.
