Works great and decided to add a WD passport ultra.problem is it won't power the drive.Will it work if i use a y cable connected to the play and the other to a wall charger?

from a brief scan answers seem split between "yes but it might not work" and "it might damage shit". probably wanna read yourself and draw your own conclusions
most reliable approach seems to be getting a powered USB hub

It probably just passes the regulated 5v from the power brick directly to the USB port.
Which means if you replaced the 1A power supply with, say, a 2.5A iPad charger, then it would be able to power the drive itself.
