What are you talking about?
Avira is free.
Comodo.

I use malware bites and microsoft security essentials and I've never had any problems

You do know there is more than the free version of avira, yes?

I use Avast. In any case, it's absurd in this day and age to pay for any antivirus.
Windows defender + Malwarebytes = Good Antivirus

SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop

I uninstalled Avast because it kept giving me blue screens
Windows Defender/MSE and MBAM

The most important one is common sense.
For the rest, Avira free is good. Or Avast, if you run Vista.

I highly recommended you do not use Avast, I've used it way back on XP and it was okay, but now it's just an abomination.
If you need realtime protection, for a free solution it seems Avira is highly praised these days, it's also what I most often install on people's computers when they ask for an AV.
If you feel like Common sense is enough, just get Malwarebytes + MSE or Clamwin and do occasional scanning
