need to restore asap but can i save my data having never performed a backup?
i can still connect to iTunes and iCloud
>>
Apple can restore my locked and loaded iPad to factory settings but told me to seek out "friends and family" for a data recovery method X)
>>

This isn't the whole story. If it were, you'd connect it to iTunes and press "backup".

What have you done to it?
>>
iTunes is waiting for access, but my iPad's disabled; reset is the only function available

http://instructionaltechtalk.com/ipad-is-disabled-fix-without-resetting-using-itunes/

This might help you.

Or it might not.
>>
the option to 'set up as new' is not available either

i'm looking for a way to back up my data despite being disabled, but even the expensive apps don't seem capable (i'm now waiting upon a refund for one that scanned effectively but would not recover)
then again i wonder if i have the same chance of recovering data after the iPad is restored, if not better!

this is killing me :)
>>
>>145219
by disabled you mean you put in the password wrong too many times and now its locked?
>>
>>145219
>i wonder if i have the same chance of recovering data after the iPad is restored, if not better!
No, you have absolutely no chance, because the restore process generates a new key for the encrypted filesystem, just as if you remote-wiped it.

I have to say, you're not really putting forward a very compelling case for how it's your own totally-not-stolen iPad, yet:
- you never backed it up (going as far as deliberately disabling iCloud backup)
- you didn't heed the warning you get about permanent lock and no backups that you get when you turn on permanent lock
- someone just happened to enter the wrong code so many times it went on permanent lock
>>
>>145221
>>145222
If that's the case, you can take it to an apple store, with proof of purchase, and they will unlock it for you.
>>
>>145225
You're confusing keycode lock and activation lock.

Keycode lock lives only on the device, and the keys are only on the device, and Apple can't give them to you because they don't have them. They couldn't give the FBI the keys because they didn't have them. That's the reason behind the FBI/Apple spat.

Activation lock is the one that Apple will switch off with proof-of-purchase, because it lives on their servers. Activation lock doesn't protect your data, and only comes into play when you've already wiped your stolen device, and you want to set it up again, activate it, and start using it.

i entered passwords in earnest and honestly think i remembered the password the minute it was disabled at 10x. but that's me all over!

anyway, for whatever reason all my emails are on the cloud but none of my vids or photos

i have spoken to Apple a couple of times, an Apple store representative, an independent reseller, and have been told each time that data cannot be recovered once an iPad mini has been disabled.. but at the same time i have been told to seek out "friends and family" or other avenues.. so i turn to Google and find this is a totally grey area - i can't even tell if any of the iOS data recovery software is legitimate
>>
>>145234
>friends and family
I think they mean, good luck redoing everything.
>>
i have the option to reset the device any time, but i am wishing so hard i can salvage 2 years worth of videos and photos
>>
btw it was a brand new password i was asked to set up the day before updating for the first time in over a year! i made it up on the fly..
wasn't expecting to plead my case tho ;)

so i get the impression there is a fix available, but it's all very convoluted

All files on iDevices are encrypted. Each file can have a different key.

The keys to decrypt the filesystem structure and the system files are obviously in the bootloader, or it wouldn't be able to boot. The keys to decrypt user files are encrypted with your passcode, meaning that if you haven't given it your passcode, the device itself has no way to access them.

**if you haven't given the iDevice your passcode, the device itself has no way to access them.**

This is why iTunes needs the device to be unlocked to back it up: it can't access the files on the device, because the device itself can't access the files on the device.

If you restore the device, that wipes it. Wiping is really quick, because it just overwrites every key with a new one, making the entire drive unreadable.

I ask this not to mock you, but out of genuine curiosity: how did you manage to own an iPad for two years, and never back it up? If you just go "next, next, next" out of the box, it sets up automatic daily backups.

I used to use a software that could access the filesystem, and make a backup that way, but it required a jailbreak.

Its probably too old to work on any newer devices, or even the newer iOS.

>>

>iPhonebrowser
Jailbreak is not actually needed: AFC is sufficient to access the data OP wants. AFC2 is the unrestricted jailbreak version that lets you access the bits of the filesystem that aren't the music, app and app-data silos.

The problem is that the device can only access files that it has the key to. If it's just booted, that's none of them (which is why if you reboot, caller id doesn't work until you enter your password for the first time).

If it's been unlocked then relocked again, almost all data is re-locked, aside from data it absolutely needs whilst locked, such as Wifi settings, mail settings so it can fetch new email, and shit that appears in Notification Center, such as calendar, notes, etc.
>>
even a couple of data recovery service teams have today confirmed the same - that data from a disabled iPad cannot be recovered

if i understand correctly AFC and likely any other similar methods are not available to me either?

can't believe i cannot simply take the device to Apple with proof of purchase and photo I.D.

would love to restore the device for my kid but i'm too determined to save the data

if anybody has a clue, i welcome all ideas :)
>>
can anybody confirm for sure, the data is still on my disabled iPad?
>>
just bumping

i found one of th two years' worth of my data stored on an external hard drive, still hoping for a way to gain access to my iPad for the other

thanks again

>can't believe i cannot simply take the device to Apple with proof of purchase and photo I.D.
Can you take your laptop to Dell and have them reset your Windows password?

Apple can reset the antitheft lock, because it's on their servers. They can't do anything about the passcode, because it's only on the device.
>>
>>145668
>can anybody confirm for sure, the data is still on my disabled iPad?
The data is still on the iPad.

However, it's encrypted, and unless you can trick the iPad into accepting your passcode, it can't decrypt it, so you can't decrypt it.

I still think you stole it. Why the fuck don't you have any kind of backup, when to be in your situation you'd need to deliberately turn backups off and lock-out on?
>>
i didn't turn anything off
rather, i never turned them *on*.

i've called Apple 3 times and they can't do a thing for it.
data recovery specialists either.

i'm contacting forensic experts now and it's looking like the same obstacle across the board.

you think you're incredulous ;) this is somewhat crazymaking, but i'm still determined to find a way.

thanks again for the ideas and support!

You did turn them on.

10 attempts defaults to off.

This is exactly the behaviour I'd expect to happen if someone stole my phone and wanted my data.
>>
i was referring to iCloud back up when i said i did not turn anything on, and i thought you were too.

i would never turn on a feature that even remotely suggested erasing my data. my photos and videos are sentimental, not sensitive X) and i sincerely hope that my data has not been erased because i'm still holding onto the possibility that i can recover it.

hope someone out there has a clue for me

thanks!
