this is a pen-pal letter thing. the author is writing the kana for each kanji and the person the author is writing to has a western name. i know that doesn't help you, but just saying.

Thanks for the entertaining letter. My friend is very international and wonderful indeed. Truly, I think that America is a salad bowl of race but perhaps your school's internationalism is something else altogether.
