only works in image boards like 4chan that use the php gd lib to make thumbnails and process the uploaded images. doesn't work anywhere else.

Gamma correction, makes the picture darker. That's all.
Some software doesn't support it (like the 4chan thumbnailer), sometimes it's an option you can disable (look for color management settings).
