I think the guy lying on the road was a motorcyclist who was behind them. You can see his silhouette fly past and ram into the back of the white car at 0:03 seconds. As for the white car itself you can see its taillights at 0:20 seconds, way down the road crashed into that lone tree

yeah, thanks, i'm already subscribed to his actual channel (youtube.com/LionWhispererTV) - that guy is the absolute exception and even he puts his trusted long-time co-workers into steel cages. he may be part of the pride and he may have devoted his life into understanding these wonderful animals - but they're still fucking killing machines. just by playing and fooling around with them you can regularly see him bleed. even the most yolked out human is puny and squishy compared to these cats of pure muscle.

but he says that lions have a natural fear of humans. only when humans are regularly around them (like on safaris, zoos or circusses) they gradually lose their fear - which is what makes these lions so incredibly dangerious. they're used to humans. you better keep your fucking distance.

isn't he being a touch hypocritical by saying people should keep their distance so lions don't get used to people, when he himself is up there wrestling and coddling with them (and broadcasting it all over youtube?)
One of those lions is gonna kill him just out of curiosity one of these days.

>>
>>982231
haha those wolves are so shit
>>
>>982702
maybe, maybe not. is an experienced free climber hypocritical when he tells climbing novices to properly secure themselves with ropes?

anyway, those are not wild lions. he runs a sanctuary, meaning all the lions came from some sort of captivity anyway. he's not trying to turn them back into wild lions (he's not encouraging them to hunt - he feeds them meat) and he's not breeding them (they're on birth control). and of course, he's only in with the lions he knows. they often have decades of shared history. i'm not saying what he does isn't dangerious (it absolutely is), but i think he's qualified to judge and take that risk. and sure, accidents happen. i can totally see him getting killed by a lion on accident when he's too cocky some distant day. but i also think with a life time of experience you can easily tell when a lion is grumpy and keep your distance that day. there's probably a million cues that tell you their mood, defensiveness and aggressiveness if you spend enough time with them.

anyway, why am i defending a stranger i don't even know? he might well be an idiot, i just like his videos.

People really should just leave spiders alone, they don't bother anything. Ladybugs that burrow through your roof during winter time are more likely to cause harm, they'll try to burrow into your nose or edge of the ear as you sleep to stay warm in some cases.

I just can't though, if I know there's a spider in my bedroom I literally can't sleep, I have to go into the spare room or if there's a spider in the bathroom I won't go to toilet until it's gone. The level of fear I have where spiders are concerned is insane, it's much easier for me to just murder them and not have to worry.

humans are a single species so we all bring the same thing to the table unlike animals in an ecosystem.
>>
>>1040176
that's one way of interpreting the video, and it's certainly the way the narrator seems to feel.

there's an implicit assumption that diverse ecologies = good ecologies. there are good and not-so-good reasons for thinking diverse ecologies are good.

on the one hand, a diverse ecology more maximally utilizes the resources inherent to its system, producing much higher biomass - and a greater variation thereof, which is commonly more useful.

HOWEVER, what goes unstated in the video is that the trophic cascade works exactly in reverse as well - remove the wolves and the whole system collapses, causing a massive die-off. While before, the ecosystem of yellowstone supported a limited number of deer, it did so sustainably by definition. Now a much greater biomass is supported, but so much more precariously.

In nature, you can basically either have a simple, robust ecosystem (think of human city ecosystems, where relatively few animals thrive but do so pretty much no matter what humans throw at them - a chaotic, difficult environment that nonetheless produces very stable populations), or you can have the nightmarishly complex ecosystems like coral reefs and rainforests, where removing one small piece of the ecosystem causes a jenga tower-like trophic cascade which ultimately destroys the whole thing.

the important thing to remember is that nature literally doesn't give a fuck which type of ecosystem prevails in a given area. It's up to us to determine which type of ecosystem is more desirable for us to have in a given area. We probably need a balance of both.

>>
>>1041933
the reason why removing wolves was bad was because they were removed to quickly. Organisms compete with each other for resources and those that can't compete go extinct. The Ecosystem in Yellowstone had been functioning with wolves for millions of years, and then in the span of a century or two (a microsecond in evolutionary time) they were gone. The important distinction that should be made is not diverse vs less diverse ecosystems, it's the level of human impact. The biodiversity of an ecosystem is dependent on things we really don't understand and is not implicit of its value or production abilities

The criticism you had of the first ecosystem model was used to justify the second, which has the very same weakness but even worse.

Let's talk about some basic ecology. First, "good" vs. "bad" and "useful" vs. "not" are not particularly definite or smart distinctions. What your main point seems to revolve around is "robustness", which is a *very* relevant trait to a ecosystem and one that is heavily researched. In mathematical and experimental ecology, one common mode of investigation into robustness is species removal, which is exactly as it sounds: take an ecosystem and remove an entire species relatively instantly.

With respect to deer, Yellowstone had a single apex predator of significance: wolves, that were removed by humans in a quite short time frame, which resulted in the relatively dramatic changes described (in reverse) in the video.

So this ecosystem seems not very robust then, right, since removing one species causes so much damage? Well, you don't measure the robustness of a system solely by its weakest link -- you removed the one particular species that would cause the most damage, in this case (and most cases) the apex predator.

No relatively-closed ecosystem can support more than at most about 4 big-prey apex predator species (thinking African savannah at max), and the vast majority support only one. They are almost always the lowest-population species and the most sensitive to environmental change -- it's basically a physical law.

continued in next post.
>>
>>1063140

continued:

What I'm saying is that very very few ecosystems, i.e. only those with the capacity to support multiple big-prey predators, can withstand the sudden removal of an apex predator without significant disruption on every level. (In mathematical ecology this is still considered "robust" btw -- there are specific thresholds at which an ecosystem becomes unstable or collapses, and Yellowstone was neither.)

But here's the most basic argument for diversity=robustness (besides the decades of mathematical, experimental, and observational proof). If there were both wolves and lions in Yellowstone, when the wolves were removed, the lions would probably find more opportunity to kill deer and expand their territory and population, thus preventing basically all the bad shit in the video. This exact same redundancy works on every level of an ecosystem to make it stronger (or in the actual food-web-type networks that are analyzed, the redundancy works in how diversified each species' prey opportunities are relative to each other -- basically the more "nightmarishly complex" it is, the more robust it is).

You then claim that simple ecosystems with only a few species are more robust. This fails your basic premise of being vulnerable to species removal. If you have an ecosystem with 6 main species, and you remove 1, do you honestly think that won't be insanely traumatic to the rest of the ecosystem?

You give as an example of robustness a human city. Try removing the apex predator: humans. Hilarity ensues, no? (That said, if you protect humans from removal, a city can be quite robust, since the base food supply of human trash is effectively unlimited and uninterrupted, and there is a decent variety of animals feeding on the trash and predatory animals feeding on them. That said, do you honestly a city can nest enough hawks and owls to manage the rat population if we ever get rid of all the stray cats, as humans have tried to do?)

cont.
>>
>>1063175

continued 3/3:

Finally, you give the example of ecosystem collapse of a coral reef. But that's not single-species removal, which in any coral reef would do literally nothing (there are seasonal apex predators for each apex predator). Coral reef collapse happens when an entire layer of the network is quickly destroyed, caused in the real world by some still-unknown combination of environmental changes and direct human interaction.

tldr; complex and diverse ecosystems are always more robust than simpler counterparts under species removal in particular (fucking obviously) and most other catastrophic scenarios in general (subject to mathematical verification).

The worm is extending its proboscis, a muscular tonguey thing for hunting, which can have no branches or a shitload like in this case. The worm retracts it afterward. The mucus you're confusing it with is secreted from its skin (and can be seen as the shiny wetness on the guy's hand) and is also used in trapping prey.

The main group fighting wolves in California are rural ranchers who the government expect to carry all the costs of introducing wild predators into the region. If there was any sort of attempt to create a government fund for fencing and reasonable range restrictions, it could happen. As it is, environmentalists want a level of freedom for wolves that's unsustainable in modern California with so many people living in WUIs, and ranchers have come to expect lies and tricks from the government so they don't even try to participate in the debate any more. There's simply not enough trust and confidence to make it work.
>>
>>1063475
>ranchers
Environmentalists don't want wolves eating livestock either (they do want less ranching, but there's not much they can do about that besides promote vegetarianism). You know perfectly well that the government works as much with ranchers as possible when it comes to predator management -- it's the only way they got wolves back into Yellowstone in the first place.

>people living in WUI
Ordinary homeowners? Fuck their concerns -- they cost the state millions in firefighting and insurance already. They have no right to demand additional wilderness management when their entire purpose was to be in the wilderness in the first place.
