>>879507
When you are practicing it doesn't matter. The biggest hurdle to get over is to stop pouring all your emotional energy into something to the point where you are getting frustrated when messing up.
>>879545
This right here.
Eventually you just have to learn to not care enough anymore. as long as the end result comes out perfect, or damn near it
>>879507
He's not so much messing up as he is changing ideas for what position/proportions the figure should be.

Oh wow you, totally missed the point then.
>>879980
Well, him being a manga artist, I'm sure he's miles ahead of me on creating the right contrast to define texture and lighting. I was merely commenting on the structure of his drawing. If this is top tier for manga, it seems it doesn't go beyond the basic. I switched to a more western style because a lot of anime stuff seemed stale. But if you really want me to, I can scan some of my stuff and save/post them as non-animated gifs if that's not against the rules.
>>879983
Which is?

I'm beginning to see why it takes Murata so long to release chapters.

>>880226
>If this is top tier for manga, it seems it doesn't go beyond the basic.
I don't know much about manga or anime, but something that really stands out to me is how you think something at a high level doesn't have basic elements.
Anything at a high level is built of it's basic components and is only as strong as it's weakest one. No matter how good your drawings become, just remember that you are it's weakest component, please stop insulting people with more talent than you.
(If you need any of this explained more in-depth let me know. You've made it rather apparent you might need it.)
>>880305
How am I supposed to tell that's the outcome from OP's clip? Aside from the line quality (and maybe the hip/leg area), it's what I would expect any 17 year old interested in japanese art to be able to do.
>>880388
Man, I get the fact that if you can't draw a circle or other geometric shapes, you can't do much else. And I've seen some simple shapes put together in a beautiful way just because the line quality was that elegant. Maybe it was my fault for judging a clip that makes it look like he's struggling with the construction of the head. I'm not trying to say anyone drawing that is bad, but the video doesn't showcase anything particularly remarkable compared to stuff I've seen. I'm not trying to insult your favorite artist(s) or anything. Here's a quick sketch by one of my favorite animatiors Glenn Keane.
Another Keane drawing.
>>880388
Also yea I'm interested in learning more. I'm about to do some drawabox stuff, wince it's heavily based off viscom. I definitely need to go back and practice some basics. namely line quality and perspective.

As an artist I understand your passion for the subject.
But you should really learn to just not knee jerk so badly to a anime/manga artist, it seriously just makes you sound like a tool. Especially when you're just seeing a small clip of a skilled artist working on just basic construction.
Keep the passion burning, but temper it with attentiveness.
To be honest you should have just started posting the Glenn Webms, they're great content that I personally haven't seen posted here before, and would have probably sparked way more honest and helpful discussion.
I mean there's going to be enough people who have never picked up a pencil who will take time to shit talk anything related to anime, just because it's anime, no need to add to it when you've got good content and a passionate understanding of art to give.

Major manga artists have many, many assistants that do the grunt work. It's the P.P. Reubens approach where the various assistants will do almost everything based upon the artist's rough layouts and the artist will come in and do the important things like characters. That's how they can keep their schedules. Even basic looking artwork like Tezuka's had scores of assistants working long hours every single day to meet deadlines.

so do you know what type of pencils / sharpeners they use?
even if I end up never going out and buying them I'm interested to know what they are and what the difference between regular pencil / sharpeners is for curiosity's sake
>>889052
not that anon, but artfag here.
idk what brands other artists use, staedtler, prismacolor, faber castell, and koh-i-noor are all good pencil brands. main differences are quality of materials and craftsmanship, plus a wider variety of hardnesses for shading and layout. sharpeners don't really matter much as long as you get one that has a metal housing. the plastic housing ones are too flexible and make for choppy sharpening. staedtler and some other brands also make erasers and sharpeners. honestly staedtler has never let me down as a brand. I would imagine a decent percentage of artists use some of their stuff.
as for paper, if you want to do doodling, you will want a sketchbook. the ones that are bound like a real book are great, but I also like the spiral ones. as long as it's acid free, the paper should last quite a while. drawing paper is also thicker and stronger than regular paper and can stand up to a lot of abuse/erasing. for a serious drawing you may want illustration board or bristol board which is even thicker. canson, strathmore, and arches are good paper brands.
artists are kinda particular about what they use. one artist might look down on some of the brands I've mentioned, and another might swear by them. hell, I've spent how many thousands of hours doing watercolour and still am using the 1/2" flat brush I bought for my first wc class. anyway you can find this stuff in pretty much any hobby store.
>>889020

>>889020
>>889020
Artfag here, typically you flip the canvas to check how the work is progressing and to get strokes that you normally couldn't do as well with the hand you're using to draw with. The new view on it will highlight mistakes that you would have otherwise missed. It can be a bit of a bastard to do a lot of work and then realize that say the eye is slightly higher than it should be.

>>879545
Thank you, I've been having trouble drawing due to depression, but this might just help.
>>889194
so like how often do they sharpen it?
The reason I'm asking is this
the last time I remember drawing was in grade 8
up until grade 8 I had always used the HB 2 or whatever pencil it is you write with to do my drawings and doodles, keep in mind I wasn't an artfag, just a regular kid whose homework occasionally required drawing of somekind, and who doodled every now and then
Anyway it was in grade 8 I switched to mechanical pencils for writing and found them a lot nicer
So it follows I used my trusty mechanical pencil for my next drawing assignment and holy shit I was blown away
something about being able to draw such thin lines turned me from a sloppy poppy to a picasso
I still don't quite understand what it is about thin lines that makes such a difference but when I finished that assignment I was convinced all artists used mechanical pencils
To shorten things up a bit I never drew again after that but still realized artists don't use mechanical pencils, but have always wondered how sharp they keep their pencils, and is there a place for mechanical pencils in art, because surely there are times when you need to draw very fine details, and it seems simpler to use a mechanical pencil for those than to keep sharpening your pencil over and over
>>889643
Artists use pretty much anything to make art from shitty stuff to expensive stuff. It really depends on the artist. All that matters is the control over your medium and the final result.

Talent only gets you so far. Plenty of children prodigies cease to amaze once they become adults because they stop practicing.
3-4 hours a day of bullshitting on 4chan could turn you into an expert at a skill in a few years if you dedicated it to something. That's 21-28 hours a week, which is a more intense work load than all but some of the most technical degrees. Pre-law is only 19.

Vhils, a portuguese artist
To all who act like Manga and Anime are really hard to draw or a hallmark of artistic talent:
It's an animation style that was specifically created for making films. There isn't a lot of detail in the drawings because that would make the technique take to long for animating a whole movie.
It is not complicated to draw a single frame and it is not supposed to be. The hard part is drawing consecutive pictures. Of course a single image still takes practice and most of the people complaining about it ITT can't draw for shit, but there are a million other styles that take more skill. If you think about starting to draw yourself I would recommend starting with very basic sketches of actual people, so you can get the proportions and shading right. If you can draw a "realistic" style you will also easily be able to adapt to anime, vice versa it is more complicated.
Holy shit the one guy who talked shit about Murata is just on damage control this entire thread it's fucking hilarious

God I hate how current schooling is so poor at teaching even the most basic ideas in artwork.
Art does not depend on time it takes to make in order to earn merit (unless its on an autistic scale, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXbQw0rE5UE). That being said, not all animu is art, just like most drawings aren't artistic inclined because they have mostly no depth!!! Drawing and any other form of art requires no talent! It is a mechanical skill, you can learn it. To perfect it it sure takes years and years of practice in a technical level, but most artists understand that it is autistic to try to achieve accuracy instead of content!
Drawing has multiple aspects to it: lost/found lines, shading etc and how the artists CHOOSES to USE in a CONTEXT of CREATIVE IMPLICATIONS, it will be more and more valued the more THOUGHT the artist has put to his work in order to convey his SUBJECTIVE INTERPRETATIONS of his subject.

Content is important, sure, but overemphasis on content over form leads to hollow symbolism slipping by and turns art into nothing more than a way for the rich to claim superiority. "achieving accuracy instead of content" is no worse than achieving content instead of accuracy--after all, content without form is nothing more than a vague sentiment you cannot convey to anyone. Art is not merely philosophy. That's why we have philosophy.

She's probably fast and just as talented with the other parts of the art as well. But in this case, it is quite a ton of repetition for the character.

That can't be Murata. I saw his stream and it's on another fucking level.

>>942408
Yeah but, you know, you gotta be, like, really good before reaching the implications of this argument.
>>951024
I dig that wash she does to soften the face. Is this a standard technique?

Fun Fact: if you want to waste money and go to art school, they will reject you if you have fagnime in your portfolio

I love how half this thread is art majors who have gone nowhere in life saying other's drawings are shit. I have zero art skills so I don't give two shits about technique. I just like what I like and pretty much everything posted is likable

Worlds best fingerpainter
>No Kim Jung Gi
>>879726
this guy is right though. OP webm has no sense of construction
>>984870
If that were true, then I guess you wouldn't need construction in drawing at all.
holy fucking shit this thread is still up??
I was just cleaning up my browser tabs for the first time this year, closing page after page, encountering quite a few 404d 4chan threads my lazy ass never closed, and lo and behold, some /wsg/ art thread I shitposted in 3 months ago still live and kicking.
I know wsg isn't the quickest moving board but damn, wtf

To the people who keep saying "Wow this is shit, I can't believe someone as talented as Murata drew that."
Maybe you don't know as much about drawing as you thought you did.

As a guy who taught himself guitar and just recently started learning how to draw, I can vouch for this. No one in my family has ever been interested in art or music, they even laughed at me when back when I started playing guitar. Now they're begging to come to my gigs. Consistent practice is the key. That's all talent is.
>>988290
Yea you'll become one of the greatest people in history at any given tasks by just practicing for a few hours every day.
It's that easy! Just practice! No such thing as talent! Genetics only apply to shit like how tall you are!
>>937823
this brush draws better than me
>>937822
that must have been the shit back in the days
>>970598
>5 hours to make a drawing that isn't even colored
That isn't impressive at all.
This thread is such a mess.
>>986668
yeah, people act like masters don't still use basic construction techniques and have half-assed sketches as the base. Like they can just skip all that and start mindlessly painting or inking out a masterpiece from nothing. Like finished paintings, both digital and traditional, don't take like 20-100 hours - not even factoring in how much time was spent just thinking about the painting beforehand.
>>961638
No, time = skill. Talent is a multiplier for the exchange rate.
>>988597
It looks like 40 minutes to an hour tops.
>>989698
So it's more like time x talent = skill.
If you have less talent, all you have to do is put in more time.
>>888785
That is an at least 100k$ Holland and Holland shotgun
>>884712
Work=(Time x Instruction) + Natural Affinity
Skill = Work / (x) - Accumulated Time
Results = Skill x Time
>>989947
Maybe it's because it's 2 am here but what's "(x)"?
>>990124
x is the initial deficit in drawing ability all men were born with when they start drawing. And go the fuck to bed
>>942858
So far this is the only art worth of serious note I've seen in this thread.
>all this triggering
IM SO FUCKING FRUSTRATED WITH MY ART
