It's not a watch to be worn, it's a piece of art. It's one of the most complex watches ever built, and only seven were made. It was done to show off what the craftsmen were capable of (and pay their salaries, obviously).

If you've ever built anything mechanical, you should be able to appreciate the beauty of an incredibly complex, precise piece of machinery regardless of what it does.

"A Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas (the working fluid) at different temperatures, such that there is a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work."

I read a really cool paper recently on estimating medieval IQs from the percentage of the population that could remember their own age.

Basically, if you look at really old survey data, youll find a disproportionately large amount of people reporting that they are x0 or x5 years old (as in 30, 35, 40, 45). People would just lose track and report estimates rounded up to nice numbers. And here is the thing, your ability to report your own age demonstrates your capacity to remember and your capacity to do simple math, which are both components of modern IQ tests. By measuring how large the effect of people rounding their own ages, you can get some idea of what percentage of that population was that stupid.

They used to do it with headlights when car manufacturers first started using LEDs. During the year or two they were doing that, if you moved your eyes quickly you could see the taillights strobing. It was extremely disorienting. I assume that's why they don't do it anymore.

When I don't add a smoothing capacitor to my circuits, the transistor for the LED I'm suing will cause that very same effect. It is weird as fuck. I can't imagine seeing that at night with all the cars on a busy street.

Up until around the 1950's, airplanes almost exclusively used engines like that to drive propellers. Now most propeller aircraft use flat 4 or 6 engines.

Back in early Roman days usage of Roman numerals wasn't as standard as it is today. There was more use of "additive" methods (adding numbers such as going from III to IIII) rather than using subtractive methods (subtracting numbers such as going from III to IV [5 less 1]).

>>901152 is wrong If that were the case nine would be written as VIIII instead of IX.

Just because someone can't do something doesn't mean they can't be a critic.
I don't have to be able to sing just to tell you that someone sucks at singing.
Same way that I don't have to be able to make a glass horse just to say that it's disproportionate.
