Coming from someone who's played through it to get all the endings, Undertale's actually a pretty good game. It's basically a spiritual successor to the Mother series, with bullet hell gameplay put into a turn-based RPG, a lot of quirky characters, and a really fucking good soundtrack. The only problem is that SJWs and freaks take it way too fucking seriously, and consider it the pinnacle of gaming that every other game should live up to. They put it on the highest pedestal they can find because "muh character diversity," as if all that makes a good game is whether or not your characters are black genderqueer transvestite lesbians with purple armpit hair.
tl;dr: Game's good and worth a playthrough if you like Mother/Earthbound, just ignore the fanbase.

The world isn't fair. And I'm okay with that, but mostly because I love Undertale.
So, here's the thing. 6 hours is a good length for it - it's possible to pad a game out for no good reason, and Undertale clearly isn't. That alone sets it apart from a lot of modern games. The last game I could say that about was Portal. Like Portal, it pretty much does all there is to do with its core elements, so why bother stretching it out?
Similarly, the narrative was neat, but it was also simple and effective. Again, it was what it needed to be without trying to be more. The same for the music and the gameplay. I think that's actually one of the major parts of its success - contrary to what its fanbase might suggest, it's one of the least pretentious games on the market right now because it knows exactly what it's doing and is content to leave it at that.
Nothing in Undertale was particularly new. It was the conjunction of elements, including the game's timing and its initial audience (able to provide sweet, free, word-of-mouth advertising), that was responsible for its success. You aren't going to find anything if you go at this all reductionist.
