That looks like a "David's Sling" surface-to-air missile.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David%27s_Sling
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/he/b/b7/David_sling_missile.jpg
http://static2.demotix.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/a_scale_large/1800-2/photos/1363859869-israels-antimissile-air-defenses-displayed-for-us-president-obama_1892212.jpg
Going to armchair this one:
Traditionally, long range missiles that target surface targets don't need a great deal of maneuverability, given that their targets can only really move around on a flat plane. Thus, the missile only really needs to pitch downwards in order to hit the target, and it can perform yawing maneuvers en-route. It becomes an asset that the missile is able to keep a stable orientation (no rolling) so that, if needed, a human operator can guide that missile to the target. Also, the flattened design probably helps the aerodynamic profile, giving the missile greater range than a more symmetrical missile.
On the other hand, air targeting missiles are required to both pitch and yaw in order to pursue a target in the air, especially if used at shorter ranges. Thus, these missiles need a symmetrical design in order to respond to any maneuver reliably.
Now, these David's Sling missiles are designed to counter longer-range rockets and cruise missiles. The wisdom here is that cruise missiles and dumb-fire rockets don't evade, so design conventions that benefit surface targeting missiles can be applied to an air-targeting missile.

Those are flares. Below a certain altitude the helicopter automatically deploys flares because it would be beyond the reaction time of the pilot.
>>851491
Oh boy, that's a war crime right there
>>851493
explain?
>>851510
Not the same guy, but it is technically against the laws of war to attack/kill someone escaping a disabled tank. If they are unarmed and pose no immediate threat, you can't hinder them from escaping the tank.

Is there any logical reason why you would fucking say that post is underrated? Has anybody expressed any kind of dissatisfaction or criticism at all against it? Are you delusional? Are you reading replies that are nonexistant? Maybe you come from communities with voting systems, but there is literally no way that you could know what other people think of that post you just replied to here. Maybe it's psychological. Maybe it's your own post you're replying to, like a 12 year old fucktard liking his own facebook posts thinking his swelling autism is going unnoticed. Maybe your self esteem depends on you tricking yourself into thinking someone out there thinks your post is worth something. Or maybe you are just a retard, the worst kind of retard, the one who thinks he's smart, the one who thinks he's the only one to have gotten the joke, to have understood the post. Well, guess what, faggot, that post is by no definition underrated so why don't you do the world a favour and go check out what the bottom of your toilet smells like?
>>852391
>Remember, your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
The stated cost often factors in development, which can be a protracted and poorly directed affair.

Isn't mlrs American? Who would we be shooting at?
And have we ever even used mlrs in combat?
>>853010
That was a Syrian battery firing on the Al-Ghab plain yesterday.
The MRLS in question were probably Soviet/Russia supplied BM-21s
>>853014
I thought MLRS is a specific American launcher?
And fuck bm-21s... Always fucking my infantry defensive lines
>>853016
No, Multiple Rocket Launch System is a pretty generic term. What NATO calls MLRS generally refers to the M270 launcher.
>>853017
Oh okay. I've got some reading to do about the subject I guess. I've always found rocket arty cool.
Why is it so much more of a slav thing?
Seems nato always prefers more conventional arty

Are you reading lines of text that are nonexistant? Maybe you come from communities with short character limits, but there is literally no way that you could know what other people think of the length of that post you just replied to here. Maybe it's psychological. Maybe it's your own post you're replying to, like a 12 year old fucktard critiquing his own facebook posts thinking his swelling schizophrenia is going unnoticed. Maybe your self esteem depends on you tricking yourself into thinking someone out there thinks your post is worth something. Or maybe you are just a retard, the worst kind of retard, the one who thinks he's swag, the one who thinks he's the only one to have forsaken the post, to have disregarded it because of its length. You don't kill a pilot who has ejected because they're officers. Crewmen are fair game.
>>847068
I was kinda hoping he'd do some kind of Great Saiyaman pose or something.

Everything was in black and white then, so the energy that nowadays goes into colour went into the sounds.
