the instrument looks quite trivial to play in all its aspects. the mechanism to generate sound is extremely simple to handle (turning the thing) and from the looks of it, playing a certain note involves merely pushing a button (as opposed to having to do intonation) and maybe adding some vibrato with wiggling, all from a hand position that is not too uncomfortable/counterintuitive. One could probably practice semi-regularly (3-4hrs per week) for 2-3 years without a teacher and then play what she did. Oh and had she not added background music, it would probably sound a lot worse.

I don't have to be a very talented musician to know what's in that first video isn't super special or unique and could be learned by someone after a year or so of minimal effort or a few months of decent practice. The hurdy gurdy and dulcimer are my favorite instruments of all times, and I'm about to drop some facts on you.
1.)The hurdy gurdy is old as shit, its been around of 900~ years by best guess.
2.)There have been tons of variations of them over the years, and pretty much every one you'll see is a handmade custom piece. The key bridges vary too greatly to even be classified. As do the number of drone strings, and addition of sympathetic strings.
3.)The name basically means to move or sway your butt/hips. Though it may not have been the original intent, it was named specifically for being an instrument of the dance.
4.)Originally the concept may have been for the instrument to be played by two people simultaneously.
5.)The hand crank is spinning a wheel that vibrates the melody strings much like the bow on a violin does, but where the hurdy gurdy differs is that it allows indefinite sustain without interruption. A melody note can be carried on so long as you operate the crank
6.) The speed at which the crank is spun determines how the drone strings resonate. The high pitched buzzing sound you often hear is caused by quickly increasing the crank tempo, and its commonly used to keep rhythm.
7.)You've been hearing hurdy gurdy music your entire life without realizing it. They're commonly used for musical scores and sound effects in TV and movies. The continuous melody is often confused with a bagpipe.
8.)The mechanical clacking of the keys was considered a desirable feature, and musicians playing the instrument often take the sound into account when composing to add another layer of complexity to pieces
While the crank hand may not be doing anything as complex as picking guitar strings, or managing a bow, the hurdy gurdy is by no means easy to learn and play. Its a multi faceted instrument that can be played many different ways, and is by far one of the coolest instruments around.

This is one of the best blends of composition and technique I've ever heard.
