Iop is a race and a religion. Pimpim is a Iop aka a race of stupid and brutal warriors. This race has a god named "Dieu Iop". If my memorie is good, you can see him personified as the Pimpim's master in the end of S02 during the fight against the king of the Chouchou.

There are 12 "races" of humanity corresponding to each god along with regular unaligned humans that inhabit the world of 12. Goultard, Tristepin's teacher is actually the son of Iop (who's basically the wakfu equivalent of zeus). Iop had a lot of problems literally keeping his dick out things and needed to rethink his existence. In doing so he decided the best way to understand mortals was to reincarnate into one. He entrusted his god powers to his son Goultard before being reborn as Tristepin. Once Tristepin is mature enough Goultard gave his memories and powers from his past life as Iop back to him. That's what we see in the OVAs
For some reason non of the fight sequences gel right with me. I thet always looked to me like something a kind-of talented 12 year old would make on flash; missing some kind of element of weight or space or somethign I can't put my finger on.

I sort of agree with you. It definitely is a bit awkward in S1, but the animation generally gets better into S2. If you want well animated fights, the OVAs are a fucking treat.
