This came up during the Boston Bombings, Americans are so nice even terrorists can't deal with it.
The usual tactic for crowd IEDs is a small blast that panics people into running and crushing together to try and escape, at which point a second bomb down the way from the first detonates and kills many more people since they're all densely packed trying to run away.
After the first blast in Boston, most people either dove against walls to take cover, or actually RAN INTO THE FIRST BLAST to try and help the wounded, so that when the much larger shrapnel-filled second bomb detonated, there were actually less people standing near it than before the first blast.
We also have fantastic EMTs and many well trained civilians, which managed to save dozens of lives even in cases of dismemberment and brutal injury. In France some people who got shot ran into the street, collapsed, and were left without help to die from blood loss. Some of the wounded who made it out of the theater weren't attended to for over 3 hours since no one made a note of where they had fallen and no one tried to go back to help them after they got out.
People slam on the US a lot, and we deserve a lot of it, but we have a sense of unity and community that puts the rest of the world to shame.
