This is called a pheromone vortex.
Ants usually navigate by detecting one another's scents, which is how they are able to make it back to their colony or find food sources easily. The theory is that the stronger a scent is, the more likely it will lead to food and other ants.
This is what happens when a group of ants lose the scent of their colony. They just follow each other's scents, hoping that someone in the group knows where they're going.

The stars will burn out, humanity will die, the distances of interstellar travel are too great, no species will ever look upon our works, we will never look upon any other, the universe will go black in a relatively short time. Hoping to go to another star is like trying to hide under a different tree during a rainstorm after yours gets wet, hoping it will be dry. Time is ticking down for the entire universe and the energy expended by stars will slowly spread out and eventually do nothing and everything will be black.
>>1082568
So?
>>1082570
This is a fact of life, how you take it is up to you. I'm not here to think for you.
>>1082571
It's also so far in the future as to be utterly irrelevant. And given our limited understanding of the world, what you wrote is wrong anyway. 200 years ago people would have told you that heavier than air flight is impossible for humans and that that is 'a fact of life', much less flying to the moon. Lets see that nihilist rhetoric stretch further and grasp at straws ever harder once we've parked colonies on every solid surface in the solar system.
>>1082576
Dude, it's a law of energy. We see it happening, we've observed it happening. Don't talk about shit you don't understand.
>>1082580
Oh, you're hitting me with the entropy bullshit now? Have you ever fucking realized the entire definition of this rule of nature you're basing your (infantile) philosophy on?
>If no energy enters or leaves an isolated system the entropy of that system increases.
The latter part is proven. Gaseous matter and so on. The former? Go ahead. Prove to me that the universe is an isolated system and that nothing enters or leaves it. I'll wait.
>>1082583
Dude, we've been talking about entropy this entire time. You're fucking thick. See ya later.
>>1082586
I see you got no arguments whatsoever. I'll take my win and comfort in it.

>>1082621
Truth be told, I'm studying to be a electromechanical engineer, so I don't have a theoretical physics background to rely on, just what you'd use in daily life and in an industrial environment. But I did ask some physicists around my uni how that shit really works because I got fucking assmad at Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the retarded entropy plot in it, so they told me that the heat death of the universe theory falls apart at that juncture. They pointed to black holes and said that it's a common theory that some of them or maybe all of them may be wormholes that lead into other universes. Better than seeing the world as an endless spiral into despair and doom, I reckon.

The 'To Be Continued' thing is from an anime called JoJos Bizarre Adventure.
The song is from:

>>1082665
What, really? I also write as a hobby. Just as a general tip, never make anything 100% nailed down. I like to make the protagonists a little on the unsure side and never really give in-depth explanations for stuff, that way the technological miracles go down easier. Also good is post-apocalyptic settings and the like, where people use amazing technology without actually knowing how it functions and are barely keeping it running (Warhammer 40k inspired this angle).
>>1080824
I actually cried

I saw it coming from a mile away too
At first I thought he was making a homemade condom.
Then I thought it was a balloon animal.
Then I realized it was a blowup latex ass for fucking.
>>1082668
Yeah, I try not to plan so much and I agree completely with the nailed down thing. I just write, and after I read what I wrote and add it to my plot and character documents.
Setting things in stone is so inflexible and predictable. I draw inspiration from Alistair Reynolds and Iain M. Banks (RIP), but also a little from 40K in how shit everything is.
If you haven't heard about those two authors, get to them ASAP. Especially Banks. Start with Consider Phlebas and work through his books.
Banks is great because of how his plots twirl and twist, while coming together at the end. Reynolds I love because of his hard sci-fi and how gritty and realistic it seems.
