The pike battle is from Alatriste, a movie starring Viggo Mortensen.
>>1020195
>Pike on pike
Isn't that what they invented Zweihanders for? They swung it around in that figure of 8 in front of them and it basically swept aside the pikes.
Then they choked up on the dull part of the weapon to give them a more practical, shorter weapon to use once they were in amongst the enemy formation itself.
Medieval combat was pretty interesting, wasn't just people running at each other and shit.

>Alatriste
thanks bruv
>none from Alexander
i am disappoint
>>1022955
Shit movie desu senpai

300 is historical warfare, it's just Hollywood-dramatized. OP never said "historically accurate" warfare.
>>1022819
>Aegean troops breaking formation
i know it's a movie but damn
>>1025704
maybe its supposed to be homeric
>>1012431
Does anyone know of historic sources stating they swapped out people in the front like this? Really damn cool how it's so organized than the dudes they were fighting
>>1025799
It's a TV series called Rome.
>>1021063
Not medieval. late 15th- second half of the 16th.
>>1021063
Those guys didn't last long, and were mainly guys like Landschneckts, mercs for hire. The Thirty Years War was noted for being bloody as fuck because of how gruesome pike warfare was.
>>1012431
That scene is shot like utter shit. You can't even tell what's going on. It's just "omg action and stabbing and mayhem!!!!"
>>1016124
During Caesar's campaigns in Gaul Romans carried oval shields, not squared ones. The Centurion is the only one with an accurate shield here.
>>1025888
15th century was still medieval.
>>1021063
Look up a thing called "Bad War".
>>1021063
As other anons of stated a clash of the pikes was avoided by nearly everyone in warfare because of how gruesome it was and it typically ended up with both groups being annihilated. It was typical in battle when a group of pikemen closed in on each other they would both raise their pikes up in an agreed way to avoid to the gruesome clash of pikes. The problem is that the men on the front row on both ends die immediately in a clash of pikes and the second row soon follow because they didn't carry shields like the pike blocks of Alexander's army.
Men at the front did get double pay but it was not worth the immediacy of death that comes with a clash of pikes. The only regular exception to this rule probably would've been the Swiss pikemen who were notorious on the battlefield for their fearlessness and down right fierceness to their enemies and to themselves. They obeyed orders without hesitation and so where other pike blocks would stop and skirmish a little the Swiss would continue to advance.
That isnt the complete picture but its the gist of what I can remember from the top of my head.
>>1027552
why wouldn't they carry a shield fucking dumbasses. And why the fuck did they go from pike to maniples and back to pike again, fucking shit make up your goddam mind peolpe
>>1027590
I think you meant shamfur dispray!
>>1020196

That's a horrible way to die.
>>1012531
He probably think it's Gladiator or The Eagle. I know I did until I watched the webm.
Also, I suggest watching Ironclad, good movie. Doesn't go into proper formations or anything, but the templar atleast uses proper swording technique.
>>1012440
Gauls did not dress like that.
