Every girl I had a relationship with said it to me at some point.
i was at work one morning and i had somebody come to me and ask me to do a job for them that i had neither the resources nor the skill to do. i spent all day making calls and pulling favors to get the stuff i needed and then worked until late at night to get everything installed.
the next day he came and found me thanked me for the work and told me that it was exactly what he needed.
it wasn't necessarily what he said that made me happy it was knowing that i had busted my ass for something that somebody truly appreciated and that it just might save lives.

I had an advisor once who, after I did something, texted "good job". It was the best fucking day...
In context: he is well known to be one of those old, genius professors who never complimented his own kids let alone anyone else, constantly made people cry, can never admit wrong... a self-admitted narcissist.
In hindsight he knew that texting me would get me wrapped around his finger and I'm sure he didn't actually care. Man that fucking guy... to this day when I see him I almost see my dad. (look up "transference" in psychology to know what I mean)

HS (in the 90s). I guess I was popular-ish, but I had a lot of junk going on at home so didn't really focus on it. Was accepted by the preppies, jocks, punks, druggies, whatever. Had friends/acquaintances in most groups. Been through enough garbage in life not to be too caught up in drama, but also still meet people where they are in life.
Didn't party or go out much due to home stuff. Didn't date at all, due to home stuff. Didn't have the wherewithal to understand my position in the social structure.
There was a girl I liked. Nice, pretty. Definitely very popular. I asked her to go with me to prom but she had already agreed to go with someone else.
Went stag. Had a good-ish time with random people. A girl (friend) asked me why I was there alone and hadn't asked anyone to go with me. I said, "I asked Anona." She said with sincere astonishment:

I was hosting a party, It's a long story but I was talking to my crush about my horrible self esteem at the balcony, she told me.

Possibly the best moment of my life considering I was depressed during a long time, wanted to post a group picture we took at the party but it's a bit private so I'll just post the pose we all did.
I think a compliment is a genuine expression of admiration or acknowledgement, verbally speaking, of someone/something other than themselves, where that other entity has done something of their own volition to garner such respect.
Positive encouragement would be like a lesser compliment, like "nice hair, it suites you!" but you didn't even consider your look that day.
In this regard I've never received a compliment. Please enjoy this wallpaper. I have done nothing of note worth mentioning to others of my own volition, and my waning hope certainly doesn't help with that.
So the best "compliment" I've received would be "I like your hair" because my hair is an auburn red, not ginger but a brownish red, wavy as well. Everyone especially the mothers keep bothering me about it. But I was just born with this, and I'll probably bald like my father soon.

She's "one of those" kids who are sad and smart all the time due to something that has happened.
She was growing into a man-hating slut due to the over-protectiveness of her mother (who was an underachiever) but I evidently showed her that people are individuals and not "good women" and "bad men" by playing with her and talking to her about her problems.
She taught me that it is really easy to make a difference and that the end result will burn in your heart for eternity. Circularly, just by saying that one sentence she made such a big difference, although she might not know it/remember it.

I know exactly what he means but I wouldn't use anger to describe it. It feels a lot like it but it doesn't have the hate that anger does. To me I'm a pretty introverted person and like keeping to myself so when someone compliments me it means they are looking into me. They have analyzed some part of me that I usually keep to myself and have judged me on it. Regardless of whether or not it's the nicest thing in the world I don't usually have that happen and I have to other way to process it than that "anger". It's like embarrassment/blushing from a compliment. Of course you like it you just don't know ho to react so your mind takes over.

I played an original song for my sister once when we were in high school.
I was frustrated because everything I wrote became sad. I even wrote a song in all major chords called "Happy" that turned into a song about how I wanted to be happy.
She told me it was a beautiful sadness. That resonated with me because I had just seen the "Raisins" South Park episode and envied Butter's beautiful sadness.

Why i found the resulting near death experience funny and relieving rather than terrifying.
Why i'd rather a dog hit by a car than take it to a vet.
Why i spent half my pay on day old baked goods for the homeless.
How and why i occasionally volunteered to take meals to elderly people who chose freedom over retirement homes.
How i'd have a home at a Rastafarian's and elderly woman's place and why if anything ever went wrong in my life.
Generally just condensed a whole month of my usual activities into a weird day that was crazy by my standards and finally ended with us sleeping outside on the street corner with down and out friends explaining the little details of my personal philosophy and why i do what i do. Whole bit was even topped off with what i later learned was the perseud meteor shower.
Sadly i dumped her shortly after as rather than hoping she'd just accept me for me she got obnoxious and started bragging to everyone within earshot about the things i did to keep busy and eventually it got back to my family despite me asking several times for her to keep quiet about it. She had this odd idea that anything that breaks from the norm or charity should be shouted from the rooftops.

Context, in grade six our teacher was conducting a verbal quiz about the planets of the solar system to the whole class. She would begin each questions with "This planet has/is".
Once again she began the question the same way "The", and paused, not a full pause, not even a half pause, but miliseconds before she moved onto "planet", but it was if I could see straight through her fucking head.
The answer was Pluto, which I blurted out with conviction before she finished the second syllable of "planet".

I'm kind of a strange looking guy. I have an athletic build, not /fit/ but not /fa/. I know I look good shirtless and I know my arms look good. I have long hair, a beard and moustache, and glasses. I was a kitchen closer at a fast food place for like 8 months. The crew up front was all qt jailbait and girls my age who were hot but not my type. They all rarely looked twice at me, even when I would do dishes in a tank top I wore under my work shirt.
Well, I had to go to court for bullshit and I got a nice crew cut and a shave.
The next time I showed up at work, literally every single one of the girls said something at some point, ranging from: "You look good as a normal person." to "See I told you, you were hot without all that hair."
Even the most stuck up bitchy girl who was my age, and had a boyfriend changed her tune. She actually kept flirting with me until I quit that shit hole.
A good friend of mine was drinking in a bar with me when he said
