Eh, it's inevitable in any culture. How many Europeans or American do you think have read and understand the Illiad?

The history of active and sophisticated cultures are always preserved only by people specifically focused and interested in their culture's past. The average newfag, or indeed anyone who entered the culture after a given item was popular, won't care enough to learn the cultures traditions and past figures which aren't immediately relevant to participating in the culture right now, and even many oldfags won't remember or care about the stuff unless someone brings it up, appreciating the nostalgia it brings to look back but not actively taking a part in trying to keep the tradition alive.

Me personally, I didn't start using the site until 2008, and so am not really an "oldfag" (though it's been almost a decade, fuck), but I was just fascinated by this place and went out of my way to understand all of the old memes and history of things that had been popular and had since faded into memory. But I'm also someone who likes history and especially pop culture history, so I'd be the exception to the rule. People rarely care about the past unless it's immediately relevant or it holds some kind of nostalgia for them.
Maybe it is depressing, but at least it doesn't indicate a stagnation or death of the culture. On the contrary, if everyone spent their time talking about shit like Pool's Closed or Slowpoke, it would indicate that there aren't new people getting involved in the culture and that it's not developing anything new. The innovation necessary for a vital culture means that some stuff gets left in the annals, "dead memes". Their could be a revival, but it won't be the same, and that's a good thing.

he has a podcast,
it always airs around midnight in Us Eastcoast time, it´s pretty good, but his obscure japanese underground music and the bad airing times kinda prevent me from listening to it
