I'm working on a novel that takes place in a post apocalyptic type world. Post all your apocalypse walls, especially those with children

MOAR info on some of your apocalypse parameters. Pure Sci Fi? Fantasy elements? From the modern day? More retro, or far future? Earth only, or other planets/civs? War? Disease? Meteor impact?

If you want /wg/ to deliver, best if you give folks something to work with.

Basically what I'm looking for is anything with like gas masks, poison gas, cities in ruin, anything portraying post apocalyptic fashion for character ideas, etc. Also, bonus points for ones with kids because the protagonists are children that grow up in this type of world.

To be specific, this apocalypse revolves around nuclear/chemical warfare that takes place in the future, but has elements alluding to the present day (I.e. space ships, abandoned schools, crumbling cityscapes). Some scenery of futuristic, run-down human communities could also be beneficial

If writing, post something for us to read.

This thread was mainly to help with inspiration for different scenes I'd like to create in the book and so far all of these have been great! I'm still in the very early stages of writing, but I'll post an excerpt from the first chapter to hear some feedback.

It is a difficult thing to start that which has no beginning. To leave a footprint behind, to speak first, to dare break the holy silence that echoes throughout eternity. A very difficult thing indeed, and yet, it comes so naturally.
These were the thoughts that flooded my mind as I watched the crumbling landscape before us. Dust clouds framed the fragmented shadows of ancient towers in the distance. Rivers of broken concrete submersed in the emerald green overgrowth of fauna. Islands of stone connected loosely by the remaining tendons of collapsed bridges. To our left shone a light, brighter than any I’d ever seen, burning beautifully, suspending the infinite particles of dust within its golden rays. The scene was so eerily peaceful, like looking into the eye of a storm as its devastation hemmed me in silence.
My attention was torn from the spectacle by a sudden splash followed by my sister’s unmistakable laughter. Tossing another rock into the sleeping river beside us, her grey eyes lit up at its splashing serenade. Her pale skin, dyed blue by the air’s chill and painted red by deep slashes, radiated a slight glow amidst the red-orange twilight through her ravaged cloak.

The sight of her battered body resurrected memories of terror and the events leading up to this moment came rushing back. The burning in my chest as water flooded my lungs. The sharp sting of cobblestones slicing away as the current pulled me along, faster and faster. An endless falling sensation followed by a numbing impact that left me gasping for air as I teetered on the brink of unconsciousness. Despite their recency, these memories seemed so distant, like remnants of a bad dream gradually being pieced together with time. I would have doubted that such events had ever occurred if not for our visible injuries. But our injuries were just that: visible. I felt no pain, merely a mild discomfort when the wind brushed against an open wound. Wiping a trail of blood that had slid down the bridge of my nose with a warm tickle, I noticed the black and purple bruises that decorated my arm. Fortunately, they would heal in due time and the fear of drowning had become a thing of the past; what bothered me now, however, were the things I couldn’t remember.
Growing bored of throwing stones, the girl smiled at me wearily through her matted black hair. The two of us were still too shaken to say what was on our minds: We’ve cheated death, without a doubt. We should have drowned in that river, but something had allowed us to survive up till this point.
>>
>>6497788“It’s like a whole new world out here, huh, Orion,” she said with a giggle. “The ceiling goes on forever without any walls to hold it up! And that lantern in the distance is so bright it hurts just to look at! So many colors and sounds I’ve never seen or heard! Where do you think we are?”
“Beats me. Maybe we’re dead,” I replied with a grin.
“If that’s true, I don’t think I’ll mind being dead in a place like this.” Picking up a broken tree branch, she began drawing in the sand.
Even after an encounter with death, she’s still a child at heart, I thought to myself, almost shocked by the fact that we were the same age. Taking a seat on a nearby rock, I watched her tiny silhouette scratch at the earth.
“Oneiro…do you remember how we got here?”
“From floating down the river of course,” she said sarcastically as she added the final touches to her work of art.
“That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
Without looking up, she shook her head slowly. “It’s all blurred together now. Everything up till now seems so far away and besides, we’re never going back to that place we called home. Maybe it’s best if we try to forget.” Her voice trailed off at the end.

Thanks for sharing. Usually I'm not huge on "vanity" threads, but this one is inclusive enough and has interesting cross-pollination, so thank you for something different & creative.

Feedback on your excerpt later.

But, I'll suggest that if you have any comments on the material posted so far as to how hit or miss they've been, it could be helpful to try and deliver more that stays closer to the parameters you're interested in. More cyberpunk-futuristic or more retro-WWI, for instance?

I posted the small gas mask series, BTW, including the WWI photos. Made me think carefully about it while searching those up, especially the experience of fitting them for maximum protection. Eye protection is essential, for instance, and greatly impacts the user experience ... something I relate to through my SCUBA diving experiences. Especially if covering the ears is required; communications and observing the world become an interesting chore.

Made me think a bit about current space tech for helmets and full face masks for re-breather units in SCUBA. What sort of embedded communications, sensors &/or computing power (if any) become interesting considerations.

The sort of decorations kids might add was something I'd never imagined before, either: >>6495295 Consider some of the sticker & stencil swag that people put on their laptops for inspiration on this aspect, as well as stencil graffiti used by street artists. Tagging your own personal gear that you live with daily becomes obvious once the first idea occurs.

That isn't a rebreather, it's just a really expensive mask that hooks up the same to the tank. They're great because its easy to allow direct breathing and they're super comfortable with a huge frame of view, but not a rebreather.

You gonna do it all hard sci fi? Or you gonna include some fantasy shit?

The whole Sword of Shannara series managed a decent crossover that way, although I wish it had leaned more hard sci fi.
>>
>>6505742
Mostly sci fi, yes, but I plan on integrating some fantasy/supernatural elements into the story. Like this takes place in a future where some humans have evolved psychokinetic powers and they become one of the worlds biggest threats since types of humans were partially to blame for the apocalypse

You ever read Damnation Alley? Short read. The movie was fucking dildos. But, the original book was pretty solid, especially for the time it was written. Zelazny in his prime was much in the same league as Harlan Ellison and Spider Robinson.

If you're interested, I can probably drop a half-dozen or so titles that are a bit older & obscure but fit in tight with the thread theme.

Not entirely obscure, but a good place to start.

A Boy And His Dog started out as a short story by Harlan Ellison. He later expanded it into a longer story, then it became a movie. It's hard to go wrong with either the written or the movie ... each has it's strengths & weaknesses. Movie (for me) was creepier because the visuals & set were well-interpreted ... Jason Robards was fucking dangerously evil in the movie.

For a writer, this is one of many examples out there where the time frame of a near-future apocalypse setting has somewhat dated the story hard since we are pretty much living in its time frame now. A cautionary tale for carefully choosing set & setting, especially if you are attempting a timeless work.

Not a book, but a great grade B cult movie. Many laughable moments for us today, but also some solid sci fi post-apocalypse themes. Nothing overly surprising or very different for anyone who's seen Planet of the Apes ... but worth seeing. For a writer, lessons to be learned here in what sci fi tropes have already been done to death and should be avoided, unless they can be approached with very fresh creativity. When Zardoz came out, some of this was quite a bit more fresh than today ... but many books and movies since have stolen heavily from this and now a lot of it just seems campy.

Another one so famous that it's only obscure today by its age. Book is a good bit different from the movie. I'm a book person (usually) so I'd rather the book. It's pretty severely dated, being nearly 60 years old. Worth the read for the style of the time, and it captures the essence of the Cold War impending doom. A good study in how it captures a lot of cultural mindset from the time the work was produced, intentionally and otherwise. I also liked it since the book is from a non-American perspective, which isn't all that common from the time period. The movie is pretty heavily Americanized, as well as more romanticized through a Hollywood filter, which turned me off despite its cinematic merits.

Aldous Huxley, so very famous for Brave New World. Wrote a lot of really heavy shit. You can go down a pretty deep rabbit hole exploring his writing.

Ape and Essence is the world after everything crashes. From a sociopolitical viewpoint, it's very much like what the worst of a pure Libertarian society and mindset would produce, especially when cross-pollinated with religious extremism. If you've read or seen The Handmaid's Tale, this is a predecessor work that's even more bleak and cruel.

There are a couple of possibilities from Kurt Vonnegut. I would suggest Cat's Cradle as one of his definitive works, especially considering an apocalypse by most unusual method, with brief post-apocalypse glimpses once it takes place. Not wanting to ruin the story, I'll say this: when reading it (from a writer's perspective), very critically evaluate the hard science of the plot & events. Vonnegut did a great job, but he missed a couple of essential science details ... I think maybe deliberately so he could continue the story for a couple of chapters after the world ends. He came up with such a creative world-ending event that I think ... from a pure science point of view ... there would have been no real survivors afterward to have anything to write about.

I have a few more & will revisit/bump the thread.

This is not really sci fi & certainly not post apocalypse related. I would strongly suggest to anyone writing that they must ... _MUST_ ... read One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. And, the movie (good as it is) just will not do. Kesey's writing in this is extraordinary. The character development, and how economically he pulls it off with his word choice, is an absolute study in how a writer needs to consider the psychology and precision of word choice.

The story and how it's told, how the perspective is developed and presented, makes the writing look easy. It's not. It's a masterwork that will reward with re-reading and study. Which is not easy, considering how sad and disturbing the story itself is.

Cool. Glad a couple of these might work out.

Dropping in right now to make sure this thread is bumped. I'm pretty sick and don't want this to die before I post a little more content. Have maybe ten or so more titles in mind, and maybe throw another movie or two and a couple unusual anime onto the pile.

Um, this book. Lucifer's hammer ... two of sci fi's greats who often collaborate hit pretty solid with this one. It's not entirely "obscure" if you're anything of a sci fi reader ... but, again, given it's publication date it's overlooked a bit in today's world. omet strikes the Earth. Big fucking comet strikes the Earth. Niven & Pournelle give a very realistic, science-based treatment wrapped up in some good storytelling for pre-, during, & post-apocalypse event as it would likely have been experienced on the West Coast of the U.S. circa early 1970s.

Honorable mention by these same two authors is The Mote In God's Eye. That is (far) future and involves Man (after colonizing a quarter of the galaxy) discovering an alien species. Why mention? he alien species, by a trick of bastard fate and physics being an asshole, was confined to their home star system. For a few hundred thousand years. While in an advanced state of intelligence ... and highly warlike/highly competitive as they consumed all their critical resources.

So ... they had an interesting evolution as they overpopulated their star system & home planet a couple dozen times and murdered themselves back into the stone age repeatedly, with shit like massive nuclear wars and dropping asteroids on their homeworld to make a point. The evolution(s) of their species, overall home system biology, and society is ... quite interesting. Some pretty profound thinking went into that story (and a follow-up or two) that takes a very long view of surviving a series of apocalypses.

Also some really tight & exciting storytelling, as Niven & Pournelle are very famous for in their prime collaborative years.

Agreed. The book, as written by David Brin, is pretty solid. Like Lucifer's Hammer, it's a more-or-less reality-based story about an approximately modern day (mid-1980s-ish) collapse of world civilization. It kind of got a little bigger than itself and larger than life by the end, but not too outrageous.

The movie sucked festering monkey butt. Badly acted and just insanely re-written, over-the-top, trope-filled tripe. They should not even be considered as related stories, other than the main character wears a postman's uniform.

A few words on David Brin's works. First off, I really admire him. However, some of his books are vastly better written than others. It's weird how wildly different his style & focus can be. I mention this because it's worth exploring some of his work, including collaborative stuff with Gregory Benford.

If you're up for it, there are five thick books worth reading that are the core of his Uplift universe; in sequence, they tell a story of an apocalypse that shatters civilization across numerous galaxies (an important, cyclical theme for galactic civilization in this universe). It's a big read: Startide Rising, The Uplift War, then the Brightness Reef trilogy: Brightness Reef (book 1), Infinity's Shore (book 2) and Heaven's Reach (book 3).

Nobody can accuse Brin of imagining on a small scale. His writing and innovative ideas are densely packed into some fine storytelling in these books.

Shows up more commonly titled Under Pressure. It also shows up as The Dragon in the Sea.

If you're a Frank Herbert fan at all, this is an essential book. The politics and the envisioned tech is a bit dated. However, not horribly so. If you can place yourself in 1956 or the 1960s, you won't notice many holes. Even by 2000, it still held up reasonably well. Frank Herbert was able to spin a story that well.

That's kind of beside the point. Under Pressure is more of a "semi-apocalyptic" scenario, occurring after "limited" nuke strikes worldwide. And, you're not reading this for the eyecandy of glitzy post apocalyptic techbabblespeak and gimmicks. You're reading this because it will psychologically grab your brain and suck you in. Hard. This is some premium Frank Herbert, a real overlooked gem of his and an essential read.

Honorable mention from this era: The Green Brain (1966). Horrible title (by today's standards), but solid book:

If humankind was ecologically destroying the inhabitable world, and insects developed a hive mind to fight back ... It never really becomes post apocalyptic so much as it describes the "apocalypse" that takes place just as the book ends. Not one of his top works, but still very worthy. He wrote a number of stories that played with the theme of insect-like hive mind (Hellstrom's Hive is another, not an apocalyptic theme, though).

Not really his best work but still detailed and intense: The White Plague. A genetically engineered plague is released by a genius driven mad with grief. Imperfect, it mutates & wipes out about 99% of the female population of the planet. Just try to imagine the repercussions if that actually happened.

It's worth trying to read everything by Frank Herbert you can find.

A few words on Andre Norton:
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andre_Norton_bibliography

She was prolific and wrote across several genres. Personally, I never really got into much of her stuff outside of her science fiction. Sh edid a lot of fantasy work, very little of which interested me, and some early "drama-mentuaries" of historical nature.

Also, keep in mind that she never intended to write to an adult audience in the sense of the advanced, mature content we expect of hard sci fi targeted toward college students and university graduates that we expect today. So, forewarned that her writing is a bit simplistic and would fit mch more neatly into a teen category today.

However, some of her books were intended for the adult audience of the 1950s. In that sense, they are a great window into that time period and mindset of being an American. As admirable as she is for numerous reasons, her work into the 1970s (and then through the 1990s) never really evolved beyond her earlier stories ... it even regressed a bit as she targeted younger readers and delved even further into her fantasy worlds/franchises and farmed off a good bit to collaborative efforts with other writers.

That said, several of her earlier sci fi works are well worth visiting, for their content and ideas as much as their historical importance in fiction writing.

I'll continue with another post, but three post-apocalyptic novels are good, if short and somewhat simplistic, reads:
- Breed to Come
- Daybreak 2250 A.D.
- Sea Siege

There are a couple others, since these themes are prominent in many of her writings (fantasy & sci fi and her interesting blend of both) ... but my memory isn't perfect enough to remember exactly which titles at the moment.

This is "sort of related"Andre Norton.

The Beast Master (in NO way related to the garbage movie) originally had one follow-up book: Lord of Thunder. Decades later she franchised the storyline, and those stories (quite frankly) are horrible and young teen-fic level.

Also, these are not "typical"post-apocalypse. They are sci fi set on another planet. But I want to mention them because they are good, short reads, and they do delve into two themes mentioned by OP: psychic powers and there is a "post-apocalypse" theme in two tangents. One is that Earth itself has been scorched to an uninhabitable cinder, so humanity can only exist on other planets. Ever. The other is a regular theme of Andre Norton's: the discovery of the remnants of a previous galactic civilization(s) that disappeared tens of thousands of years ago in their own galaxy-wide, apocalyptic wars. Wars so thoroughly destructive that (often dangerous) fragments of their civilization are found, but rarely ever much more.

These two books, in tandem, are a pretty great story that set up and delve into these themes in some fairly gritty and creepy storytelling. Keeping in mind my previous warning that Andre Norton's works are sometimes a bit thin, simplistic and under-developed by today's standards, just enjoy these for what they are: a fun retro-journey into some good pulp sci fi from 50 years ago.

This one is a classic. It's actually aged pretty well. Stewart wrote in relatively general terms, so for most of the story you can imagine almost any time frame between 1950 and nearly the present. Obviously, some details date it, but not so obviously that they detract from the story itself. A very sedate story, just sort of a slice-of-life thing, and very timeless.

I recommend this one as a "good read" in general, but a "great read" as an abject lesson to up-and-coming writers to study for some essential style tips to greatly extend the relevancy of their work for decades instead of having it age poorly in five years.

Note, the cover art here is fairly misleading since it's much more futuristic-looking than the story even tries to achieve.

I've never read his books, so I can't really say how good this is, but when I read about virally-evolved cats trying to get a handle on man's technology I immediately want to put it down and look for something else. I feel like this this author was well ahead of the furries on this front.
>>
Hey OP, I'm really interested in your book, it's looking up to be really sweet. Do you know what name you're giving it? I want to read it.
>>
>>6517908
Don't know for sure what to call it yet. I've played around with various names (The Atlantean, Eden, Pursuit of Horizons) but still haven't decided. But if anyone thinks of a name leave a reply and maybe I'll use it.
>>
>>6491696
Hey, OP. Is there any way that I can keep up with your book? I would really like to read it when it's done.
Is there a social media where I can follow you or friend you?
>>
>>6519156
I'm afraid I don't really have a website or social media to advertise my writing at this point in time. I'm just getting started on something I've wanted to do for a very long time. That said, I really do appreciate all the positive feedback and interest you guys have shown in the book and would love to keep everyone in the loop :) the first thing that comes to my mind would be to make a kickstarter page or something like that.
>>

>first thing that comes to my mind would be to make a kickstarter page or something like

Not to shit-talk ambitions or anything, but you really need to establish even a small portfolio before you chain the cart up in front of that horse. You can establish a small web presence with a dozen samples of writing (not even from this particular project ... just anything). In fact, even better if its 12 or 20 1000-word pieces, just fragments of ideas & stories that are entirely different genre's.

Include a couple pages with a couple dozen books you've read and review them. Movies or games or whatever else. If you do anything art or photos/visual etc., put some shitty art up; make a deviantart account so you can cross-link between the sites. Just demonstrate you can do SOMETHING more than the 4 or 5 paragraphs you posted here.

You can get the whole thing started for about $50 for the first year and just casually put up 3 or 4 small & simple items a week. Nothing elaborate, just fucking do it random blog style.

Get 6 months of whatever up, then try the kickstarter. At least you'll have a chance then, and you'll spend some time refining whatever it is you intend to attempt so the project you describe doesn't sound all half-assed and retarded.

I really enjoyed that first part- you should come through and make a couple threads on /wg/ when you've made considerable progress and give us some place to read it because the idea seems really interesting. It's a story seemingly told a million times, however you used language that was higher-than-average enough to interest me, so I'm truly curious as to see how you put it together. So please, come with more later

An essential post-apocalypse classic. The follow-up book to it was so-so at best, but this one is pretty solid writing.

I like it. I hope you keep writing. One point of criticism and it's really an issue of taste. I prefer not to use archaic or outdated versions of words. It can come of as pretentious. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that's what you're up to. But I think "submerged" would be a better use here than "submersed." Just a thought. Otherwise, good stuff.

I spoke with one of the local Latvians (through a translator). He was 82 at the time (2008, if I remember correctly).

He said (paraphrased):

> This was a holy place for thousands of years. Then the Germans came [the Brotherhood of the Sword] and they cut down our sacred trees and broke our sacred stones to build their church.

> Then the Soviets came, and they destroyed the church.

> My father and I, and some families that have lived here for 1000 years, cleaned the church, made it into a chapel. Our community has meetings here, we have weddings here.

> It has become a holy place again.

I have to agree. I spent two days there. I walked around the church grounds and sat in the chapel. It is a place of deep serenity and spirit.

From the interior of what's left of a nearby giant, old barn. Another building used for tank target practice. Most of the buildings in the countryside of that area were demolished in a similar fashion.
