First attempt at making a nice looking Ubuntu distro. I don't normally use Ubuntu but I got this laptop for free and fixed it. It has a super slow Celeron processor at 1.4GHz. Any advice to make it look nicer?

I like it more then Unity and its more customizable.

Because it's more responsive than KDE, more slim and stable than Gnome with its extensions shit and easier to customize from the GUI than both of them, and Unity has even less customization options than osx
You might also go with MATE or Cinammon but in my eyes they are less customizable than xfce.
i really like lxde. you might want to give it a try.
has nice customisation posibillities like disappearing docks and whatnot
