>Evidence from the Spitzer Telescope suggests that the pillars in M16 may already have been destroyed by a supernova explosion. Hot gas observed by Spitzer in 2007 suggests that the area was disturbed by a supernova that exploded some 8000 to 9000 years ago. Due to the distance of the nebula, the light from the supernova would have reached Earth between 1000 and 2000 years ago. The more slowly moving shock wave from the supernova would have taken a few thousand years to move through the nebula, and would blow away the delicate pillars – but the light showing us the destruction will not reach the Earth for another millennium.[13]
That anon wasn't wrong, he just explained it badly.
I have a tonne of space papes, so, I'm going to try to dump them all, I don't know if I'll post them all tonight, or just some.
Let's get going, I guess.

They appear to be, given the diameter of the Moon is ~1/4 the Earth.
>>6380834
In essence, we can use telescopes to view "in to the past." Lets explain this by simplifying the numbers. Lets say light travels at 1 inch a second. if we stood 500 feet back we could use a telescope to view forward. what this means is that light that wont reach earth for another 6 thousand years, is viewable by a telescope that is capable of seeing that distance out. hope this makes SOME sense. it realy is an increadible phenomenon
>>6395548
I don't think that's what the anon who initially asked about it was referring to--the speed of light phenomenon is pretty well known. It's the difference between the speed of the light and the speed of the shockwave that tells us the pillars might be gone. The light from the supernova has already reached us, but the shockwave didn't hit the pillars until a while later, and that's the one that hasn't reached us yet.
>>6396007
Ah i get it. oh well, still a somewhat relevant explanation.

No problem senpai. One of my favourite artists of all time, I find it really cool that he can make so many different genres so well.
