Honestly he looks as much like a hedgehog ad Mickey Mouse looks like a mouse, and in japan all rodents = mouse
Pikachu looks more like a rabbit than a mouse, and it was apparently based on this thing which looks more like a hamster than a mouse, but to Japan this = mouse
