Why are KKnD 1 and 2 so often called Red Alert or Starcraft rip-offs?
Red Alert came out on October 31, 1996 (according to wikipedia) and the first playable demo of KKnD 1 was released just one day later. It's not like they made that shit all up in one day.
Starcraft was released in March 1998, while the first (known) playable demo of KKnD 2 is from November 1997. The beta of Starcraft was in January or so of 1998 and another playable demo of KKnD 2 was out in February.
Calling them rip-offs is just stupid.
Back in the day KKnD was called a Command & Conquer (C&C) clone.
No one ever calls KKnD a Red Alert or Starcraft rip-off, ever. KKnD fell to obscurity like every other mediocre C&C clone released in 96/97 and no one cares.

Almost every RTS game released in that era had it's own unique features. They weren't really any C&C clones.
If anything they should be called Dune II clones anyway since C&C is just a reskin of Dune II with the Atreides renamed into GDI, Harkonnen renamed into NOD and the Ordos cut.

KKnD is one of the less obscure strategy games of that era. Just think of Katapult, Polanie, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Crusade, War Breeds, Enemy Nations, Jurassic Wars, Genesia, Skullcaps, Baldies, Dark Reign, Z,...

Because in the mid 90's there were only two established RTS schools: Westwood and Blizzard, so it rather obvious that less known or established titles would be comraped mostly to them, just like FPS games were called "Doom clones" for years.

I enjoyed War, Inc. Also, Dark Reign was weird. Kinda fun, but not great.
Back then, you were a clone regardless of features. You could have RPG elements, a plot, and voice acting in your FPS, and you'd still have been called a 'Doom Clone'. RTS games were the same. Didn't matter how different they did it; they were all C&C clones. It's just how it was.
Total Annihilation was wonderful, though. Just superb.
