How the hell do I get my hands on a Famicom and Famicom Disk System (with AC adapter preferably)?
Is eBay my only route? 99% of the consoles are from Japan so shipping is at least $50 every time.
Not much on my Craigslist unfortunately...
>>3361481
Well, you can go in Japan...
>>3361486
but.... my wallet
You can try Japanese Yahoo auctions, but you'd have to use a third party to buy it then ship it outside Japan which may end up costing a bit.

Buyee
>>3361481
What're you getting?
The Original
Twin
Turbo
Titler
TV
Top Loader?
I see you saw the Gaming Historian video as well
Stay strong and keep holding out until you can get a good deal.
I got my Twin Famicom from eBay a few months ago for around $60 + $10 shipping, and it came with 9 games.
>>3361504
Well I mean, in this case, the only way you can really get this is with a bunch of money, so you really have no better choice.
>>3361481
The FDS is what's driving the shipping up. They look beautiful under a Famicom, but they aren't worth buying. They're just so incredibly unreliable. You could get a RAM adapter and the FDS Stick instead. Even the EverDrive N8 has tolerable FDS support (the audio is the weak link). I just got an original Famicom and a Super Fami for $56 shipped from Akiba games. I've never paid more the $30 shipped for a loose original Famicom.
Just get an Everdrive; it emulates the FDS, you dumb dummy.

>Just get an Everdrive; it emulates the FDS, you dumb dummy.
Indeed, just get an everdrive dumb dummy. Only the sound sucks.
>>3362434
The Fami is gorgeous on its own too. If you want to actually play games the FDS is basically a waste of money. If it's not broken it will break and they're stupid overpriced when 'refurbished'. Maybe just get a busted one for the aesthetic and buy an everdrive.
>>3362470
For the record I'm a Famicom console hoarder so I totally feel you. Not trying to be a dick. I've always held off on an FDS for the aformentioned reasons, I just got an EverDrive and it's totally rad.

The FDS can be good. You'll just need to know how to replace the belt drive and adjust the spindle.
It's actually quite easy with the right instructions and replacement belts. The FDS is a real fun system.
what's the easiest model of famicom + (or not) disk system to get working in america on american tvs?
>>3362476
nice synth my man
>>3361481
i once has a golden opportunity to get one, with gun and box and all included for about 40 dollars but let it pass since i don't buy to just collect and the thing was just going to be some shiny shit under my TV to brag about, it's also very fragile for what i've heard and unless you are a MUH AUTHENTIC XPEERIENCE faggot that cant emulate for his life or a collector then you are going to regret purchasing one
>>3362521
Any of the ones that output composite. The original model only outputs RF by default so you need a TV that can go up to channel 96 and even then it might not correctly tune into the right channel.
>>3362476
I really hope those speakers are magnetically sealed.
>>3362521
A Twin or a Turbo. They ouput composite and the FDS comes attached so there's no interference.
I'd recomend the top loader if you don't want an FDS. It also outputs composite.
>>3362549
I love my Twin Famicom turbo
>>3362548
They're active studio monitors, no interference with the CRT. I know they look like garage-sale fake wood speakers from battlestation threads though.
>>3361481
Hey, I just saw the newest Video Game Historian episode too!!!
Hello, fellow retro gamer!
I got an AV modded famicom from a reseller on famicomworld a few years back, was $60 total iirc. Also got a write modded disk system and write cable from tototek at the time, the refurb belt has held up surprisingly well to semi regular use.
FDSLoadr is a hassle to use, but this was before the FDS stick existed, and I've already written every game I wanted to $2 copies of trash games.
I'd like to get a titler someday, but I won't be actively putting money aside for it. If I had the income, I'd be one of those ubernerds collecting every model, high priority to the Sharp TV and M8/M82. Would also be interested to see more from the guy who modded a Super Famicom Box with a much longer menu and list of playable games.
>>3362636
>cheap ticket
>to japan
hahahahahahahahahaha
also, wouldn't there be a problem with getting electronics past customs?
>>3362636
I don't quite understand why you are insulting the guy that asked which version...
>>3363260
I fly nrt-lax return for a few hundred bucks regularly.
I appreciate that's several months allowance for you but it's nothing for adults with jobs.
>>3363263
I'm insulting the guy (you, samefag) because you were trying to look smart but made an ass of of yourself. You don't understand because you're an autist who believes itself more clever than the rest of the world.
>>3363254
Titler's pretty nice. The color is different but it outputs S-Video and has other cool features. I've considered RBG modding it but I might leave it pure.
Since we actually have a thread regarding the FDS, Does anybody have experience troubleshooting it? I'm trying to fix one up that I managed to get for cheap in non-working shape. I replaced the belt and corrected the alignment based on this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOY1G3Sg11Q
But it still doesn't work properly. For one, the drive always thinks a disk is inserted. I presume that's based on one of the hardware switches on the PCB, but I'm not sure which. They all seem to be in proper places. If I boot it up with a disk inserted it sometimes loads (but once it prompts for a disk flip it's done for), or gives me an error 21. Sometimes it'll just go to black (as if it loaded) and after several seconds pop back with error 27. I like to think I'm slightly closer to getting it working (wouldn't even try to read before and the head alignment was all jacked up) but I'm looking for any advice that can put me on the right track. Even another site that can be used as a resource would be helpful. Famicomdisksystem.com hasn't been as helpful as expected.
>>3363397
Try the Famicom World forum, maybe.
www.famicomworld.com/forum
All I want is a small, 8-10" CRT on my desk with a famicom and famicom disk system, along with Castlevania I & II next to it.
>>3361481
You must not be looking hard enough on eBay, I buy systems and games from Japan all the time and barely pay much in shipping.
Just last week I picked up nearly 50 Super Famicom games from the same dude for 60 Ameri-Trump Dollars flat including shipping.
I thought that this design was very cute
Phew boy it never fucking fails that a "/vr/" user will come on here right after they see some stupid fucking E-Celeb video and ask about the system/game.
>>3364237
Come on, don't be an elitist dick, we're not /v/. I've been a collector for over 15 years and I'm always glad to see other people take an interest, wherever from.
What Famicom disk games are worth it, though?
>>3364402
>not an elitist
>immediately starts talking about how we're so much better than /v/
Do you even stop to think when you write things?
>>3366535
mario 1 (fds version has different minus world)
mario 2
doki doki panic
zelda
zelda 2
metroid
castlevania

>>3366535
Gyruss! A little obscure but a fun shooter.
>>3366601
You forgot Nazo no Marusame
>>3365398
>AVGN got me into retro gaming back in 2005
lmao. How do you overlook retro games even then?
>>3366629
Because they weren't really retro in 2005 (NES, SNES, etc...). I was born in 92, grew up on NES and shit. In 2005 I was really into Halo.
>>3366676
They were.
>>3364157
>Girls und Panzer blurays.
jelly
>>3362524
Thanks, anon. It's a CZ-101 and seriously underrated (They're cheap because of it though).
>>3363373
You should leave it pure, my fami-friend. RGB isn't really a game-changing upgrade over S-Video on the Famicom. Not to mention the Titler is exceedingly rare.
>>3366601
Zelda games and Castlevania 2 have significant text involvement though don't they? A little harder to enjoy without understanding the language or having memorized the game
