I'm a fuckass so the only recommendations I have are Life Force, Recca, and Parodius.

You could try out Darius Gaiden, that comes sorta close to TF's epicness.

nah mate, however the music is on a par if not better.

Thunder Force V, it's more heavy metal but much easier (the Freerange weapon is broken).

Darius Gaiden is also nice, but more laid back instead of pumping.
